모오캐과 Family Lotidae(lings, rocklings, burbots).
세계에 6속 22종, 한국에 2속 2종이 알려져 있다. 북극해, 대서양, 태평양에 분포한다. 가이드롭사루스 속(genus Gaidropsarus)의 몇 종을 제외하고 모두 북반구에 산다. 대구를 닮은 물고기이다 등지느러미는 1개가 있는 것에서부터 3개가 있는 것까지 있으며 뒷지느러미는 1개이다. 모든 종이 턱에 수염이 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 둥글다. 알은 기름 방울을 달고 있다. 유럽 북부와 북아메리카 그리고 압록강 상류를 포함한 중국 북부, 시베리아 등에서 발견되는 모오캐는 본과에서 유일한 담수종이며 나머지 모든 종은 바다에서 산다. 

※ 모오캐과는 넬슨의 분류에서 대구과의 아과 subfamily Lotinae(cuskfishes)로 편성되어 있고 현재 한국 자료들도 대구과로 분류하고 있다. 그러나 fishbase. org와 WORM 그리고 위키피디아 등은 Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes의 개정 분류를 적용시켜 따라 독립된 과로 승격시켜 분류하고 있다. 필자는 이 분류를 적용하기로 하였다(기사 입력 날자; 2021년 1월)

Family Lotidae(lings, rocklings, burbots).
6 genera, 22 species worldwide, 2 genera 2 species in Korea. The Lotidae are a family of cod-like fishes commonly known as lings or rocklings. They are found in the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. Except for a few species of Gaidropsarus, all are restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. One to three dorsal fins and one anal fin. Chin barbel always present. Caudal fin rounded. Egg with oil globule. Lota lota is the only freshwater member of the family, occurring in the northern Europe, Siberia, northern China, northern Korea and North America.

※ In Nelson's classification, Family Lotidae is organized as a subfamily Lotinae(cuskfishes) in Family Gadidae(Cods), and currently Korean literatures are also classify it Gadidae. But fishbase. org, WORM, Wikipedia and other internet informations classify as an independent family following the revised classification of Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes(This page was last edited on January 2021)

최대어; 41cmTL, 보통크기; 30cmTL. 서북대서양은 그린란드에서 뉴펀들랜드(캐나다 동해안)와 멕시코만 북부까지 북동부 대서양은 유럽의 연안과 영국 제도, 바렌트 해에서 비스캐이만 북부까지 분포하며 극동 지방에서 매우 희귀하게 발견되며 한국은 포항에서 발견되었다.
