연필샛멸과 Family Microstomatidae(Pencil smelts)
세계에 3속 21종이 알려져 있으며 한국에는 분포하지 않는다. 대서양, 인도양, 태평양에 분포하는 해수어이다. 중층심해(mesopelagic)에서부터 점심해(漸深海/bathypelagic)에 걸쳐 서식한다. 크기가 작다. 눈은 크며 지름이 주둥이 길이의 2배에 달한다. 입은 작고 지느러미들에 가시 기조가 없다. 등지느러미는 몸의 중간보다 훨씬 뒤에 있다. 가슴지느러미 기부는 몸 측명에 있다. 기름지느러미가 있는 것이 있고 없는 것도 있다. 측선은 꼬리지느러미 위까지 연장되어 있다(Microstoma). 상업적 가치는 없다. 학명 Microstomatidae의 어원은 그리스어 mikros(small)와 stoma(mouth)이다. 즉 “작은 입”이다.

Diagnostic characters: body small; eye large, more than twice the length of snout; mouth small; no spines in fins; dorsal fin well behind midpoint of body; pectoral fin base on sides of body; adipose fin present or absent; lateral line extending onto caudal fin(Microstoma). No commercial value. Etymology Greek, mikros = small + Greek, stoma = mouth.
