Family Muraenesocidae(Pike congers)

(3 species distributing in Korea)
(Common pike conger). Muraenesox bagio(Hamilton, 1822)
(Daggertooth pike conger). Muraenesox cinereus(Forsskål, 1775)

Family Muraenesocidae(Pike congers)
Called as Pike congers in English common name, and “conger” is a name mainly used for the Family Congridae species. 6 genera and 15 species are known in Muraenesocidae, and 3 species are known in Korea. Distributes in tropical and subtropical waters of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean. Some species are known to enter brackish water. Pike congers are small- to large-sized fishes(from 60 to 250 cm in total length). Vertebrae; 120-216. Body long to very long, more or less cylindrical in front, compressed along tail. With a slender and very pointed head, visible jaw teeth and large gill openings extending from the pectoral-fin base almost to the ventral midline. Mouth terminal, large, extending well beyond eye. Large eyes covered with skin.

A prominent bump on the tip of the lower jaw fits into a notch on the middle of the upper jaw. Teeth always large, prominent, sharp, especially on vomer. Multiserial on jaws and typically in 3 rows on vomer(roof of mouth): a median row of canines flanked on each side by a row of much smaller teeth, Eye relatively large. No lips. Nostrils on sides of snout, the anterior one a short, free tube, the posterior one a simple aperture in front of eye; branchiostegal rays long, curving up around throat, but not overlapping ventrally; gill opening a vertical or oblique slit in front of pectoral fin. Pectoral fins well developed.  No spines in fins. Origin of dorsal fin over or slightly before pectoral base and more or less over gill opening; pectoral fins always present, although reduced to a minute flap or absent in Gavialiceps; no pelvic fins. No scales. Conspicuous lateral line. Colour: some species yellow. others silvery grey to black or completely black.

Occurrs in tropical waters from the coast out to the deep sea, but principally on the shelf and slope. Their habits are poorly known, but the shallow water species are apparently nocturnal fishes feeding on bottom-living fishes and crustaceans. The species of Congresox and Muraenesox are valued as food; considerable quantities are landed each year in Japan, southeast Asia and India.
