Superclass Osteichthyes(bony fishes)→Class Actinopterygii(ray-finned fishes)→Order Atheriniformes(silversides)→ Family Notocheiridae(surf silversides).
서프은줄멸과 Family Notocheiridae(Surf sardines or Surf silversides).
그 후 1901년에 다른 어류 학자들(Jordan and Starks)이 일본에서 채집된 한 신종의 학명을 아이소 플로스마리스(Iso flosmaris)로 명명했는데 오길비가 발견한 “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)”와 닮은 데가 많아서 서프은줄멸과(Notocheiridae)에 집어 넣었다.
Family Notocheiridae(Surf sardines or Surf silversides). Previously, Family Notocheiridae included 6 species; 5 species in genus Iso and 1 species in genus Notocheirus. but all 5 species in the genus Iso became independent as Family Isonidae(Isonids), leaving only 1 species(Notocheirus hubbsi) in Family Notocheiridae. The time of the classification change seems to be around 2020. The only species, Notocheirus hubbsi, is called “Swell scum sardine” in English. It is a saltwater fish, distributed in Argentina and Chile. If you search the Internet for Family Notocheiridae, information before the family change is mixed up, causing confusion(as of 2023).
[Designation history of Family Isonidae and Family Notocheiridae is fraught with confusion] The process by which the family Isonidae and the family Notocheiridae were created has a very confusing past. William Ogilby(1805–1873), an Irish zoologist, identified a fish collected in Australia as a new species, gave it the common name “flower of the wave,” the scientific name Tropidostethus rhothopilus, and classified it in the Family Notocheiridae. Then, in 1901, other ichthyologists Jordan and Starks) named a new species collected in Japan as “Iso flosmaris”, which is similar to the “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)” discovered by Ogilvy. Because it has many similarities, it placed in the Notocheiridae. Iso flosmaris is a species also distributed in Korea and Korean common name is 물꽃치(=water flower fish). In 1919, it was revealed that the genus name Tropidostethus had already been applied to insects, so the genus name was changed to Iso, and Tropidostethus rhothopilus was revised to Iso rhothopilus. As the family composition of Family Notocheiridae went up and down, the family member expanded to include one species of genus Notocheirus(Notocheirus hubbsi) and five species of genus Iso. Notocheirus hopsi was designated as a new species in 1937, and the specimen was discovered in Chile. About in 1944, claims began to be made that Notocheirus hubbsi had a slightly different lineage from the genus Iso, and in 1950, Notocheirus hubbsi was subdivided into the subfamily(Notocheirinae). Finally, around 1996, the genus Iso became independent from the Family Notocheiridae and established the new Family Isonidae(Isonids), leaving only one species, Notocheirus hopsi, in the family Notocheiridae. However, confusion arises because there is still information that indicates the Isonids are in the Family Notocheiridae rather than in the Family Isonidae
