Family Ophichthidae(Snake eels).
※[한국명 “바다뱀”이 일으키는 혼란/The confusion in Korean names of Snake eels].

바다뱀과의 학명 “오피크티디(Ophichthidae)"의 어원은 그리스어의 ophis(serpent/뱀)와 ichthys(fish/물고기)이다.

The structure of the head and mouth of a snake eel named Painted Eel(species; Echelus myrus). The anterior nostrils(front nostril) is tubular and is not placed above the snout like a regular fish, but in upper lip. The posterior nostril is not tube-shaped, simple, perforated hole, usually lying within or piercing the upper lip, opening into mouth. so seems not to be shown in the drawing. Family Ophichthidae(Snake eels).
62 genera, 330 species worldwide, 7 genera with 15 species in Korea. Distribution: tropical to warm temperate waters. Commonly known as the snake eels. "Ophichthidae" comes from Greek ophis("serpent") and ichthys("fish"). They are named for their physical appearance, they have long, cylindrical snakelike bodies. They are often spotted or striped in colour, mimicking the appearance of venomous sea snakes to deter predators. They inhabit a wide range of habitats, from coastal shallows and even rivers, to depths of above 800 m. Most species are bottom dwellers, hiding in mud or sand to capture their prey of crustaceans and small fish, but some are pelagic. These species range from 5 cm to 2.5 m or more in length.

Dorsal and anal fins present or absent. Many species lack fins altogether, improving their ability to burrow into the substrate like worms. The tail tip is either hard, finless and pointed or the tail fin is conspicuous and confluent with the dorsal and anal fins. The pointed snout is used for burrowing; in addition, many species have a bony, sharp tail and are equally adept at burrowing backwards and forwards.

The eyes are usually small and situated just above the mouth. The snout is often pointed or nearly so, and frequently overhangs the lower jaw. The nostrils are widely separated, the front nostril normally tubular, posterior nostril usually lying within or piercing the upper lip, opening into mouth. Tongue attached. The gill openings occur on mid-side to underneath the body. Branchiostegal rays 15-49 pairs, overlapping midventrally to form a 'jugostegalia', a basketlike structure. Poorly developed neural spines, when present. Hyomandibulae usually vertical, but may be inclined backward or forward. With or without pectoral fins. Vertebrae 110-270. The body is scaleless; lateral line complete, often well developed pores on head as well as body, Although very common, snake-eels are seldom seen because they spend most of the time buried in the sand or mud. Hunt small fishes and crustaceans by sense of smell. Often, they are washed ashore by large storms.

The criteria used as major classification traits of sea eels include the number, shape and arrangement of teeth, the number and distribution of head sensory pores, the location of the dorsal fin origin, and body color. It is classified into subfamily Myrophinae and Ophichthinae according to the presence or absence of caudal fin. Subfamily Myrophinae has caudal fins and subfamily Ophichthinae do not have caudal fins. In particular, the hard and strong tail without tail fins of the subfamily Ophichthinae is well adapted to digging into the sand or mud bottom.
