※ 주의(notice); 돛양태과의 여러 종 이름들과 혼동되는 이름이다(약 190종 중 한국에 16종이 분포한다). 돛양태과(Family Callionymidae; 영명/Dragonets; 드라고넷)는 농어목으로 분류됨으로 쏨뱅이목과는 거리가 먼 관계이다(Information relevant only to Koreans).

양태과(良太科) Family Platycephalidae(Flatheads).
세계에 18속 약 80 종이 알려져 있고 한국에는 7속 9종이 알려져있다. 인도-태평양에 분포하는 해수어이다. 양태과의 몇 종은 지중해에서도 발견되는데 수에즈 운하를 통해서 지중해로 이입된 종들이다. 양태과 종들은 평균 크기가 10 cm로 작은 물고기들이다. 그러나 양태속(Platycephalus)의 일부 종은 최대 1.1 미터로 크다. 영명의 ‘flathead’가 의미하는 것처럼 머리는 위아래로 상당히 또는 심하게 납작하고(종편) 위에서 보면 옆으로 너비가 넓다. 아래턱은 위턱보다 돌출되었다. 배지느러미 기부는 가슴지느러미 기부에서 좀 떨어진 뒤 쪽에 위치한다. 등지느러미는 2개이며 서로 분리되어있다. 제1등지느러미는 6-9 개의 극조로 구성되어 있고 1번 가시는 매우 짧고 그 다음 기조와 잘 연결되어 있지 아니하다. 제2등지느러미는 11-15 개의 연조로 이루어져있다. 뒷지느러미는 극조가 없고 기저부가 길다. 가슴지느러미 기조 수는 16-22 개이다. 바닥에 사는 습성에 맞게 눈은 머리 위 피부에 달려있다. 작은 물고기와 갑각류를 먹는다. 주로 바닥에 엎드려 있거나 몸의 일부를 모래 펄에 묻어 놓고 있다. 눈만 밖으로 내놓고 기다리고 있다가 먹이감이 가까이 기어오거나 헤엄쳐오는 것이 있으면 갑자기 기습하여 큰 입으로 삼킨다. 10-300 m 수심에서 발견된다. 

Family Platycephalidae(Flatheads).
18 genera 80 species worldwide, 7 genera with 9 species in Korea. Marine. Distribute in Indo-Pacific. A few species have been caught in the eastern Mediterranean, having traveled there from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal. Platycephalids are small to medium-sized fish. Most species are small, reaching an average of 10 cm in length. However, a few species in the genus Platycephalus are known to grow up to a meter in length. Moderately to strongly depressed head and wide when seen from above. Pelvic fins behind pectoral base. Two dorsal fins: D1 6-9 spines with the first spine short and barely connected with the remaining fins; D2 11-15 soft rays. Pectoral fin with 16-22 rays. Anal fin without spine and base line long. Their eyes are situated on the upper surface, in accordance with their bottom-dwelling lifestyle. Flatheads are mostly marine demersal fish, often resting directly on the seabed, sometimes partially buried in sand or mud. Feed mainly on crustaceans and small fishes. They lie in wait buried by sand, with only their eyes poking out from the substrate. When prospective prey walks or swims close to the platycephalid's head, the flathead strikes rapidly, engulfing the prey in its large mouth. Occurring at about 10-300 m.

1. 까지양태(Crocodile flathead). Cociella crocodilus(G. Cuvier, 1829)
2. 악어양태(Spot eye flathead). Inegocia guttata (Cuvier, 1829)/
[문제점] 한국 분포종 명단에 들어있으나 이 종은 까지양태(Cociella crocodilus)의 동종이명으로 검색된다. 따라서 한국명의 악어양태는 까지양태와 동일한 것이거나 또는 제3의 다른 종일 수 있다.
[Issue] The Korea distribution list includes both Cociella crocodilus and Inegocia guttata, but Inegocia guttata is the same species(synonym) of Cociella crocodilus, the accepted name is Cociella crocodilus. Therefore, the Korean name for Inegocia guttata can be the Cociella crocodilus or a third different species.
