쏠종개과 Family Plotosidae(Eeltail catfishes)
메기류의 하나인 쏠종개류는 한국의 제주도에서부터 일본 중부 이남, 오스트레일리아, 피지까지의 서태평양과 인도양의 해수와 담수계에 분포한다. 세계에 10속 42 종이 알려져 있으며 한국에는 1속 1종(쏠종개/Striped catfish; Plotosus lineatus)이 알려져 있다. 전체 종 수의 약 반은 담수 종이다.

몸통은 메기와 비슷하고 머리는 약간 종편되고 몸은 뒤로 갈수록 가늘며 측편되었다. 대부분 4쌍의 입수염을 가지고 있다. 기름지느러미는 없다. 등지느러미는 1개이며 기저부는 짧고 앞쪽에 1개의 가시가 있다. 등지느러미 뒤에 제2등지느러미인 것처럼 보이는 지느러미는 꼬리지느러미의 기조가 등쪽으로 확대된 부분으로 “전방 역류 꼬리지느러미 기조(procurrent caudal rays)”의 등쪽이라고 한다. 해부학적으로 제2등지느러미는 없는 것으로 정의되지만 뒷지느러미는 있으며 앞쪽으로 멀리 전진해 나온 “전방 역류 꼬리지느러미 기조(procurrent caudal rays)”의 배쪽 기조와 연결되어 있다고 정의된다. 꼬리는 뱀장어 비슷하게 길고 끝은 뾰족하지만 뭉툭하게 둥근 것도 있다. 등지느러미와 가슴지느러미의 가시에는 일부 종들의 경우 독성이 있어서 쏘이면 통증이 나타나며 쏠종개(Plotosus lineatus)라는 종에 쏘이면 치명적일 수도 있다. 저서성 물고기이며 입수염으로 바닥의 먹이를 탐지한다.

Family Plotosidae(Eeltail catfishes)
These catfishes are native to the Indian Ocean and western Pacific from southernmost Korea, to south of central Japan, Australia and Fiji. The family includes about 42 species in 10 genera, 1 genus with 1 species in Korea(Striped catfish; Plotosus lineatus). About half of the species are freshwater.

Form similar to catfish, head slightly depressed, with a long tapering body and compressed posteriorly. Most species have four pairs of barbels. The adipose fin is absent. Has 1 dorsal fin, dorsal fin short in base line, with single spine at front ray. Procurrent caudal rays of caudodorsal fin may be far advanced along dorsal. Anatomically second dorsal fin absent, but anal fin present. Lower procurrent caudal rays confluent with long anal fin. Tails are elongated in an eel-like fashion; tails are pointed or bluntly rounded. Dorsal and pectoral-fin spines venomous. Some of these catfishes can inflict painful wounds; stings from Plotosus lineatus may result in death. They are bottom feeders and use the barbels around their mouths to detect food.
