Family Pomatomidae(Bluefishes) → Family 359

(Family Pomatomidae /Bluefishes )

(Pomatomidae ; Bluefishes)

Family Pomatomidae (Bluefishes)
One genera, one species world wide. Widely distributed around the world in tropical and subtropical waters of in Atlantic, Indian, Pacific including the Mediterranean and Black Seas, except for the northern Pacific Ocean. At one time, gnomefishes were included, but these are now grouped in a separate family, Scombropidae. One extinct relative of the bluefish is Lophar miocaenius, from the Late Miocene of Southern California. Lophar miocaenus is an extinct bony fish almost identical in form to the living bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, differing in its dentition, which consisted of "thick, conical subequal teeth" instead of the sharp, slender teeth and canines seen in bluefish. L. miocaenus lived during the Upper Miocene subepoch of Southern California. More information; read article in species section(Pomatomus saltatrix).
