보리멸과 Family Sillaginidae(Smelt-whitings)
한국에 1속 4종, 세계에 3속 약 31종이 알려져있다. 인도•서태평양에 분포하며 수심이 얕은 연안 해역과 기수의 바닥에서 산다. 극히 드물게는 담수로 올라가는 종도 있다. 영명은 보통 실라고(Sillago)이지만 스멜트(smelt) 또는 화이팅(whiting) 또는 스멜트 화이팅(smelt-whiting)이라고도 칭한다. 입이 작고 뾰족하다. 등지느러미는 2개이며 서로 가깝게 인접해 있다. 제1등지느러미는 극조로 이루어져 있으며 제2등지느러미의 첫 기조는 극조이다. 최대 45cm(TL) 크기이며 기록적으로는 70cm 크기도 있다. 과명의 어원은 그리스어 syllego이며 뜻은 ‘모이다(to make meeting)’이다.

One genus with four species in Korea, 3 genera with about 31 species worldwide. Indo-West Pacific. Coastal and brackish water, rarely into freshwater. Elongated body with a small sharp mouth. Two dorsal fins, the first with 10~13 spines, second with one leading spine and 16~27 soft rays, anal fin with two small spines and 14~26 soft rays. Feed mainly on benthic or epibenthic organisms. Esteemed table fish. Etymologyi Greek syllego=to make meeting.
