도미과 Family Sparidae(Porgies ;포기)
세계에 33속 약 115종, 한국에 6속 8종이 알려져 있다. 해수어이며 기수에 들어가는 종도 있고 매우 드물게 담수에 들어가는 종도 있다. 영어로는 포기(porgy) 또는 씨 브림(sea bream)이라 부른다. 인도양, 태평양, 대서양의 온대와 열대 해역에 분포한다. 입을 다물었을 때 위턱(maxilla)은 덮개에 씌워진다. 도미류 중 가장 큰 것은 1.2m에 달한다. 딱딱한 껍질을 가진 저서 무척추동물을 주식한다. 암수한몸인 종들이 많다. 세계적으로 고급 식용어이며 인기 낚시 어종이다. 과의 학명 Sparidae는 그리스어 Sparoides가 어원이며 ‘황금 머리의 물고기’ 뜻이다.

Thirty-three genera with about 115 species worldwide, six genera with eight species in Korea. Marine(very rarely brackish and freshwater), Atlantic, Indian and Pacific, temperate and tropical. Usually called as porgy or sea bream. Maxilla covered by a sheath when mouth closed. Maximum length about 1.2m. Canivores of hard-shelled benthic invertebrates. Many species have been found to be hermaphroditic. Premier food and game fishes. Etymology : Greek, Sparoides = a fish with golden head.
