귀상어과/Family Sphyrnidae
한국에 1속 2종, 세계에 2속 8종이 있다. 머리가 납작한 망치 또는 비행기 날개처럼 옆으로 확장되고 머리 양 끝에 눈이 위치하였다. 옆으로 확장된 머리는 감각기관의 능력을 확장시키는 구조일 것으로 생각된다. 입은 주둥이 아래에 있다. 아가미구멍은 5쌍, 눈은 둥글고 순막이 있다. 분수공이 없다. 미병부와 꼬리지느러미 사이에 미기각이 있다. 종에 따라 0.9m~4.5m까지 크기가 다양하다. 전 세계 해양의 온대~열대 해역에 분포하며 경골어류, 연골어류, 두족류, 갑각류 등을 잡아 먹는다. 태생이며 완전히 발육된 새끼를 낳는다. 사람에게 위험할 수 있는 종류로 분류된다.

One geneus with two species in Korea, two genera with eight species worldwide. Global distribution in chiefly warm waters. Marine, coastal, occasionally in brackish waters. Head laterally expanded with eye and nasal openings much wider set than in other sharks. The blades of head presumably sever to increase the sharks’ sensory capabilities. Five gill openings. No spiracle. Round eyes with nictitating membrane. Without keel on lateral side of caudal peduncle. The species can be distinguished by the shape of leading edge of their hammer-shaped heads. Total length sizes from 0.9m to 4.5m. Feed on bony fish, elasmobranchs, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Young born fully developed. Potentially dangerous.
