Families Synaphobranchidae(Cutthroat eels).

Families Synaphobranchidae(Cutthroat eels).
12 general, 41 species worldwide; 1 genus with 1 species in Korea. Distribution: Worldwide(Atlantic, Indian and Pacific); tropical and temperate. Habitat: benthic, deep water or deep-sea(larvae pelagic); depth range 0-3,700 m, common 450-600m. Cutthroat eels range from 23 to 160 cm (9.1 to 63.0 in) in length. Body elongated very long. Eye very small and placed at middle of upper jaw. The pectoral fin very small and close to the abdomen. The gill opening placed below the pectoral fin or at the insertion of pectoral fin. Pectoral fin absent in a few species. Vertebrae 110-205. They are distinguished by the presence of telescopic eyes in the larvae; its lens at anterodorsal end.

Although typically a scavenger, Snubnosed eel(Simenchelys parasitica) is better known for using its powerful jaws and teeth to burrow into larger fishes as a parasite.
