점매가리과의 학명 “Veliferidae”의 어원은 돛(sail)을 의미하는 라틴어 velifer(velum)와 가지고 다닌다(carry)라는 뜻인 fero의 합성어로 “돛을 달고 다니는 물고기(a fish carrying sails)”의 뜻이다. 점매가리과(Family Veliferidae)는 2속에 2종 밖에 없는 작은 과이며 한국에 1종이 알려져 있다. 2종의 명단은 다음과 같다. ①Metavelifer multiradiatus(Spinyfin velifer). ②Velifer hypselopterus(Sailfin velifer/한국명; 점매가리). 점매가리과 물고기는 인도양, 서태평양과 중부 태평양에 분포한다. 이악어목(Oder Lampriformes)의 다른 과 물고기들과 달리 외해의 깊은 바다가 아닌 수심 100m 이내의 얕은 연안 바다에 산다. 또한 다른 과의 물고기들과 달리 몸이 훨씬 작으며 체장 30 cm 이내이다. 몸이 옆으로 길지 않고 체고가 높고 옆으로 납작한 몸을 가졌다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미는 높이가 높고 기저부가 길며 기저부에 비늘로 구성된 수납 홈(sheath)이 있다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 앞쪽 기조들을 수납 홈 안으로 접어 넣을 수 있다. 배지느러미 기조 수는 8-9 개, 척추골 수는 33-34 개, 새조골 수는 6개이다. 부레는 항문을 지난다. 몸은 크기가 작고 잘 떨어져나가는 성질의 원형비늘로 덮여 있다. 가슴지느러미는 둥글다. 입은 작은데 앞으로 멀리 튀어나갈 수 있는 입이며 이빨은 없다.
