분류계통/경골상강→조기강→쏨뱅이목→볼락과 볼락과 Family Sebastidae(Rockfishes, rockcods and thornyheads). Family Sebastidae(Rockfishes, rockcods and thornyheads). The Sebastidae family is usually small to medium-sized fish, less than 50 cm long. However, the largest species, Short-track rockfish(Sebastes borealis) recorded 108 cm in total length. It is distributed in the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Aleutian Islands, and the Bering Sea, and is also found in California, USA, and southern Japan. The smallest species is the Yellow Sea rockfish(Sebastes koreanus), of which total length is 13.7 cm. It is distributed only in the west coast of Korea(Yellow Sea). The golden redfish(Sebastes norvegicus), distributed in the northern Atlantic Ocean, is also a large fish reaching 100.0 cm in total length. Body usually weakly compressed; head very bony, relatively large, and with ridges and spines. Head spines range from poorly to well developed; spines below eye range from 0 to many. Gill membranes free from isthmus. Eye large; snout variable in length; numerous small conical teeth on jaws; a single dorsal fin, strongly notched at the rear of the spiny part. All species have venom glands in their dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines. XII strong, venomous spines, 9.5 to 11 or more soft rays; anal fin III, 5; pelvics I, 5, under pectorals; pectorals large, 11-24, upper rays branched in adult; lateral line with 12-54 pored or tubed scales; scales rough. They can be found in marine and brackish waters. More than 110 of the species are ovoviviparous. After mating, the male's sperm is stored in the female's body and fertilized after about 1 month. The female hatches the eggs in her belly. The larvae are born after maturation in the mother's womb. Immediately after birth, they feed on zooplankton. "Korean spelling: 볼락(bol-rak) or 볼낙(bol-nak)?"; There are many cases where rockfish is written as ‘볼낙(bol-nak)’ in everyday usage, but according to the Standard Korean Language Dictionary of the National Institute of the Korean Language, the correct spelling is ‘볼락(bol-rak)‘. Koreans believe Dokdo is part of their country and have people living there. Japan also claims the islets, calling them “Takeshima.” This disagreement has caused tension between the two countries. For Koreans, Dokdo is very important as a symbol of their history and pride. |

The Short-raker Rockfish(Sebastes borealis); the largest in Family Sebastidae. (CC BY-NC). This Shortraker Rockfish was caught in a commercial fishing net in the Bering Sea in the winter of 2007, then frozen and donated to AFSC for research. The fish weighed in at 62 pounds and was measured at 112 centimeters (44.1 inches). After viewing the otoliths under a microscope, it was determined that the age of the fish was between 90 to 115 years old. Pictured with the famous fish are several Science Center staff.
