(Other names in Korea)

(Origin of myeong-tae; the nominal Korean name for Alaska Pollock)

Distribution; North Pacific/from Kivalina, Alaska, to the southern Sea of Japan and to Carmel, California, USA.
General; Alaska pollock looks similar to pacific cod but has a slimmer and longer appearance than pacific cod. The body is slightly compressed on sides and depth is high in the front part. Behind of the second dorsal fin is sharply low in depth and slender. Eyes are large and located slightly above the center of the head. The mouth is large and the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. There is one barbel at the front center of lower jaw, but it is so small that it is hardly visible. Unlike pollock, the barbel of cod is much longer than pollock and the upper jaw of cod is longer than the lower jaw. Has 3 dorsal fins, 2 anal fins, and the rear end edge of caudal fin is vertical. The pelvic fins have a slightly elongated filament. The lateral line is continuous to about the back end of the first dorsal-fin base; it is interrupted at the rear of the body. On the head are lateral line pores. It is known that there is little difference in shape between female and male. The body light-colored, the back dark brown, and the body side with brown spots arranged horizontally to form three stripes, and the belly is white. The speckled coloring of Alaska pollock makes it more difficult for predators to see them when they are near sandy ocean floors.

The adults usually live near to the sea floor, but sometimes they also appear near the surface. They perform diurnal vertical migrations. Found in cold seas with a water temperature of 1-10℃, but their habitat varies slightly according to age. Adults occur near continental slopes in the North Pacific, where the water temperature is about 10~12℃, but young pollock lives in deeper seas where the temperature is about 1~6℃ because it can withstand cooler water temperatures. Males and females live in separate groups and begin mating between the ages of 3 to 5. After the female lays eggs, in vitro fertilization takes place in which males sprinkle sperm to fertilize. This spawning process takes place for a month in a year in the sea at a depth of 90 to 200 m. The female lays about 100,000 to 1 million eggs, and these eggs float in sea water and hatch after 9 to 28 days. The lifespan is about 12 to 16 years, and a report that the longest lived up to 31 years. But in another source, Alaska pollock is a relatively fast-growing and short-lived species, Eats small crustaceans, fish, and squid. Alaska pollock often used as daily foods for Koreans because the fresh is white and have little fishy odor. The main dishes are pot soup, simmered fish, grilled Pollock, Pan-fried fillet etc.

[Norway Pollock]; Very small populations of fish genetically identical to Gadus chalcogrammus are found in the Barents Sea waters of northern Norway and Russia. This fish was initially described as its own species under the taxon Theragra finnmarchica by Norwegian zoologist. The common name used for the fish was "Norway pollock". Genetic analyses have shown that the fish is genetically identical to the Alaska pollock. It is therefore considered to be conspecific with the Pacific species and is attributed to Gadus chalcogrammus.
