분포; 아시아/한강, 남한강, 북한강, 임진강, 한탄강, 금강에 분포하며 한국 고유종이다.
일반개요; 몸은 약간 길고 배는 편평하며 등 쪽은 둥글다. 머리는 위아래로 납작하고 주둥이는 돌출되어 뾰족하다. 입은 주둥이 아래에 있다. 입 수염은 4쌍으로 1쌍은 입 가장자리에 있고 3쌍은 아래턱 밑에 있으며 모두 눈 지름보다 짧다. 눈은 머리 측면의 중앙보다 약간 위에 있다. 측선은 완전하여 후반부는 직선이다. 가슴지느러미기부와 배지느러미 기부 사이의 복부에는 비늘이 없는 대신 미세한 돌기가 있다.

몸 색깔은 황갈색이며, 배쪽은 색깔이 연하다. 등쪽에 폭이 넓은 암색 반점이 5~6개 있으며, 몸 중앙에는 7~8개의 반점이 있다. 눈 아래의 주둥이 쪽으로 검은색 선이 그어져 있다. 가슴지느러미, 등지느러미, 꼬리지느러미에는 꾸구리(ggu-gu-ri; Gobiobotia macrocephala)에서 볼 수 있는 반점은 없다. 산란기에 암컷은 몸에 노란색, 수컷은 진한 갈색을 띤다. 유속이 빠르고 자갈이 많이 깔린 하천 상류 지역에서 수서 곤충의 유충을 먹고 산다. 자갈 바닥에 잘 숨고, 민첩해서 돌에서 돌로 자주 옮겨 간다. 산란기는 4~5월이다. 한강, 남한강, 북한강, 임진강, 한탄강, 금강에 분포하며 한국 고유종이다. 환경부 지정 멸종 위기 종 2급이다.

Distribution; Asia/Han river drainage and Geum river including Im-jin and Han-tan river of south Korea, endemic to South Korea.
General; It is endemic to South Korea. Body elongated, with flattened abdomen and rounded back. Head depressed, snout tip pointed. Mouth below snout tip. With 4 pairs of barbels, one pair developed at corner of mouth, 3 pairs located under the lower jaw, all barbels shorter than eye diameter. Eye placed slightly above the center point of head. Lateral line complete and straight posteriorly. Small papillae between pectoral fins instead of scales.

Brown body color, pale ventrally. 5~6 large elongated dark blotches along the back, 7~8 dark blotches along the mid axis of the body side. A blackish line from the bottom of eye towards snout direction. No marks on pectoral, dorsal, and caudal fins. In spawning season, female gets yellowish hue and male with deep brown. Inhabit upper reaches of streams with pebble bottoms where water flows fast. Feed on larvae of aquatic insects. Quickly hide under stones. Spawn in April to May. Designated to endangered species by Korean government.
