Gonorynchus abbreviates is a fish whose specimens were collected in Japan in the 1840s and brought to the Netherlands, where they were preserved and later, species name designated by Dr. Marinus Boeseman(1916-2006) of the Dutch National Museum of Natural History.
Body height is narrow, length is long and the cross section is close to cylindrical shape. The snout is sharply pointed and long, and its length is about twice the diameter of the eye. The mouth opens underneath the snout, and there is one short whisker hanging below the end of the snout. The dorsal and pelvic fins are located symmetrically at the posterior body. It can be distinguished from other species of the same genus by the number of soft rays on its pelvic fin(8). Pectoral fin located close to the belly. The margin of the caudal fin is shallowly concaved. The scales are ctenoid scales, very small in size and cover the entire head and body. The scales are small and with more than 100 lateral scales. The dorsal side is light brown, the belly color is pale. The dorsal fin, pectoral fin, pelvic fin, and the latter half of the caudal fin are black. Anal fin light gray or whitish. Total length about 30cm. It lives in the lower part of the continental shelf at a depth of about 100m and eats shrimp and shellfish.
※ Etmology of Korean name “Ap-chi” of Family Gonorynchidae(guess)/In the English common name of the Gonorynchidae, “beaked” is often used, such as Beaked salmons or Beaked sandfish. When viewed from the side, the snout of the Gonorynchus is pointed like a bird's beak, and when viewed three-dimensionally, it is flat, similar to a duck's snout. The Korean name ap-chi(압치) seems to have taken advantage of the meaning of “beaked”. The syllable “ap” in Korean name is “壓(press)” in Chinese character, and “chi” means fish. It can be interpreted that it is a fish whose snout is depressed like a duck's beak. (Just a guess).
