Order Syngnathiformes Family Syngnathidae (pipefishes and seahorses) Booth’s pipefish Halicampus boothae(Whitley, 1964) Max length/17.5 cm SL Korean name/ddi-geo-mul-ga-si-chi(띠거물가시치) Japanese name/ホソウミヤッコ(Hosou Miyakko/호소미야코) Chinese name/隆吻海蠋魚(륭문해촉어) D/spines 0, soft rays 18-24, A/spines 0, soft rays 3~4. P1/10~12. Rings/trunk,13~14+tail,37~42. Caudal fin rays/10.
Distribution; Indo-Western Pacific/Durban(South Africa), Comoro Islands, Jeju Island(south Korea), Pacific coasts of Kyushu and Honshu(Japan), Zamboanga(philippines), Nias island(Sumatra, Indonesia), Chesterfield Islands, Queensland(Australia), Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Lord Howe, Norfolk islands, Fiji, Tonga. General; Booth's pipefish(Halicampus boothae) has a chopstick-shaped body that is very long and slender. The length of the tail from behind the anus to the base of the caudal fin is almost three times longer than the length of the body from the gill holes to the anus. It has a caudal fin. Short head and snout. Median ridge above the dorsum of the snout is high and has serrated edge. The dorsal surface of the body is smooth without spines. Has no pelvic fins. The anal fin is below the origin of the dorsal fin and very small or rudimentary. The anus is located right in front of the anal fin. Body without scales, head and entire body are covered with body rings made of bony plates. Dermal flaps usually present on eye, sometimes present elsewhere on head and body.
There is a ridge on the side of the snout. The superior trunk ridge is not connected to the superior tail ridge and ends below the base of the dorsal fin. The median trunk ridge on the side of the body curves downward at the rear end and connects with the inferior tail ridge at the anus. The inferior trunk ridge is not connected to the lower tail ridge(inferior tail ridge) and ends in front of the anus.
The length of the snout is not very long compared to the length of the head, so it is clearly distinguished from the pipefish(Seaweed pipefish/Syngnathus schlegeli; distributed in Korea). Booth's pipefish is similar in appearance to the Crested pipefish(Trachyrhamphus serratus; distributed in Korea), with the only difference being the location of the anus, the anus of the Booth's pipefish is located below the front base of the dorsal fin, whereas the anus of the Crested Pipefish is located below the midpoint of dorsal fin base. (Note/the syllable “geo-mul“ in the Korean name “ddi-geo-mul-ga-si-chi” means big=equivalent to Big pipefish with bands)
Colour varies from light to dark brown or reddish brown, 10 to 11 indistinct, faint white vertical bands at regular intervals along the back and upper side. These indistinct bands are arranged in such a way that they skip several body rings, different from the borders of the body rings. With a pale tip on the snout. The caudal fin has a light body color and all other fins are transparent. The Booth’s pipefish(Halicampus boothae) is ovoviviparous, the male stores the eggs in a well-developed brood pouch at the ventral surface of the tail, and gives birth to live young. It lives amongst rich algal growth on rocky and coral reef areas shallower than 30 meters deep.
