분포; 서북태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 동중국해에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었다. 치어는 몸색이 검정색에 가까운 흑갈색이며 유어는 회흑색 바탕에 경계선이 불분명하고 너비가 넓은 흑색 띠무늬가 사선으로 있다(동갈돗돔의 무늬와 혼동된다). 성어는 붉은색이 약간 들어간 회흑색 바탕에 검정색이 불규칙하게 번져있다. 아래 입술에 짧은 수염이 밀집해 있다. 연안의 암초 주변 모래밭에 살며 어초나 난파선 곁에 잘 모인다.

Distribution: Northwest Pacific/ South Sea of Korea, southern Sea of Japan and East China Sea.
General: Body and head compressed. Juvenile blackish brown in body color. Body of young individuals blackish grey with 2 indistinct oblique bands, in larger adults, these bands are usually more indistinct. Well developed papillae and barbels on the fleshy lower lip. Inhabits over sandy bottom near rocky reefs, sunken ships and artificial reefs, also in river mouth.
