분포; 남아메리카/브라질 동부 미나스 제라이스 주(Minas Gerais)의 상프란시스쿠 강(São Francisco River) 수계에 서식한다.
일반개요; 실버팁 테트라는 브라질 동부의 상프란시스쿠 강 수계에 서식하는 종으로 관상어로 많이 사용되는 물고기이다. 최대 3 cm 밖에 안 되는 작은 물고기이다. 수컷은 구리빛이며 암컷은 색이 연하고 은빛을 띤다. 암수 모두 지느러미들의 끝이 백색이어서 “실버 팁 테트라”라고 부른다. 제2등지느러미에 해당하는 작은 기름지느러미가 없는 것이 다른 테트라종들과 다른 점이다. 비늘은 원형 비늘이다. 꼬리지느러미 기부가 검다. 몸이 전체적으로 구리 색을 보이면서 투명하다. 야간에 휴식할 때는 구리 색과 검은 색이 은색으로 변한다. 아침에 다시 활동을 시작하면 색상이 살아난다. 암수의 차이는 색상이 약간 다른 것 외에 암컷의 복부가 수컷보다 아주 조금 더 크다. 수컷의 색상이 더 진하며 암컷보다 몸이 가늘다.

강 본류로부터 멀리 떨어진 지류에서 잘 사는 경향이 있다. 맑은 물과 탁한 물 양쪽 환경 모두에서 발견된다. 실버테트라는 관상어 시장에서 흔히 판매되고 있는 종이며 관상어 기르기 초보자들이 가장 많이 선택하는 물고기이다. 사육하기가 쉬우며 아무 것이나 잘 먹는다. 관상어 시장에서는 “구리 테트라(copper tetra)”라는 이름으로 호칭되는 일이 많다. 이 열대성 물고기는 수온 22°C - 28°C 에서 활력이 좋다. 약간 산성이 있는 pH of 6.0 - 8.0. 의 물에서 잘 살며 수조의 크기는 최소한 50리터 정도이어야 한다. 실버팁 테트라는 한 마리만 수조에 넣었을 경우 비슷한 크기의 다른 테트라 종을 입으로 쪼는 공격성을 보일 때가 있다. 이 행동은 여러 마리를 함께 넣었을 때 현저히 감소되며 따라서 6 마리 이상, 10마리, 또는 그 이상 많은 동료를 넣어주는 것이 바람직하다.

Distribution; South America/São Francisco River basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
General; Silvertip tetra(Hasemania nana) is a species of characid freshwater fish native to streams and creeks in the São Francisco basin in Brazil, but frequently kept in aquariums. This small fish reaches up to 3 cm(1.2 in) in standard length. The males have a copper color, the females are more pale and silvery. Both have white tips on the fins, hence the name. Scales cycloid. They differ from most other tetras by lacking a small second dorsal(adipose) fin. Silvertip tetras have a black area at the base of their caudal fin. The fish are transparent except for the fact that their bodies have an overall copper sheen. During the night, the copper and black become silver as the fish rests — the color is reactivated once the fish becomes active in the morning. Other than coloration, sexual dimorphism is slight, the female having a very slightly larger belly. Males tend to be more intensely coloured and slimmer than females.

Tends to inhabit creeks and tributaries away from the main river channels. Apparently, it’s found in both white and black water environments. This species is ubiquitous in most dealers’ tanks and is one of the best choices for the newcomer to fishkeeping. Easy to feed. It will readily accept just about anything offered. It is sometimes seen for sale with the common name ‘copper tetra’. These tropical, freshwater fish thrive in temperatures that range from 71°F - 82°F (22°C - 28°C). The silvertip tetra lives in slightly acidic waters that range from a pH of 6.0 - 8.0. When held in captivity, the silvertip tetra needs a tank size with a minimum of around 50 litres (10 gallons). Silvertip tetras are slightly more aggressive than other comparable smaller tetras if kept alone, observed occasionally to nip other similarly sized tetras. this behaviour is reduced dramatically when it is maintained in a group. It’s therefore recommended to buy no less than 6 of these, preferably 10 or more.
