Lateral view of Fat greenling(Hexagrammos otakii) |
Order Scorpaeniformes Family Hexagrammidae(Greenlings) Distribution; Northwest Pacific; Korean Peninsula/The entire coast of the South Korea, and North Korea's Rajin, Chongjin, Wonsan, Hamhung, Nampo, and Haeju. Almost all around japan/Southern Hokkaido, the east and southwestern coasts of Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Nagasaki, and Sado Island. China/Liaodong Peninsula, northern Shandong Peninsula, Bohai Sea. Russia/Primorye, Sakhalin, and southern Kuril Islands. The head and body are spindle-shaped and slightly flattened from side to side. Head small and slightly pointed. The upper jaw protrudes forward compared to the lower jaw. The rear end of the upper jaw does not reach the center of the eye. The space between the eyes is slightly convex and flat. A round skin flap above the eye that looks like a white eyebrow. A leaf-shaped cortical protrusion on the top of the head slightly behind the eye, and a vestigial cortical protrusion on the occiput. With teeth on both jaws and the vomer, but none on the palatine bone. Spine part and soft ray part of dorsal fin is connected, and a shallow notch in between. The height of the dorsal fin spines is almost the same as that of the soft rays. The base length of spined dorsal fin part is slightly shorter than that of soft rayed part. The location of soft rayed part of dorsal fin is almost symmetrical with the anal fin. The posterior margin of the caudal fin is truncated or very slightly concave. The origin of the pectoral fin is slightly behind the origin of dorsal fin. The pectoral fin margin is rounded, and the rear end extend well short of the anus(cloaca), which is located immediately in front of the anal fin. The pelvic fin originates behind the base of the pectoral fin. The body is covered with ctenoid scales. The head is scaled on the area behind the eye, including the gill cover, and on the center area of the cheek. The front part of the head, including the snout, is scale-free. Fat greenlings lack swim bladders. Has five lateral lines. The first line is located close to the dorsal line on upper body and ends just past the center of soft dorsal fin. The second and third lines are complete and reach the caudal peduncle. The fourth line begins at the gill neck and ends just past the pelvic fin. After a brief gap, the fifth line extends to the base of the caudal fin. While some claim that only the first line of the five lateral lines has the sensory function, but I have found no supporting evidence. The base color of the body varies greatly depending on the environment, ranging from yellowish brown, dark brown, and milky white. The pattern occupies a large area on this base color, so the color of the pattern tends to dominate the overall appearance. Although the color may appear different, the shape and arrangement of the patterns remain relatively consistent, and the belly is always lighter. During the spawning season, the male displays a golden nuptial color. They live in coastal areas with abundant rocks and seaweed, feeding on shrimp, small shellfish, and fish. They spawn from October to January, attaching their egg masses to seaweed or rocks, and the male guards the eggs until they hatch. The hatched larvae reach sexual maturity after about a year for males and about two years for females. The larvae feed only during the day. The spawning season, November to December, is closed to fishing. They are used in various foods and are a major commercial fish. Most farmed Fat greenlings are from China, and their body length is consistent at 30 cm. The largest official record for a wild fish is 57.0 cm (TL) (Source: fishbase.org). Distinguishing between Spotty belly greenling(Hexagrammos agrammus) and fat Greenling(Hexagrammos otakii) Etymology of Greenling; The fish of the genus Hexagrammos are commonly referred to by the English name "greenling." The "ling" in "greenling" is a diminutive suffix meaning "small," so the name translates to "small green fish." However, nearly all fish in the genus Hexagrammos are brownish-yellow or reddish brown. According to one theory, the name "greenling" was given because the fish are often found in areas with a lot of green seaweed. Etymology of Hexagrammos; The scientific name Genus, Hexagrammos, comes from the ancient Greek words "hexa"(six) and "gramma"(line or stripe), meaning "fish with six lateral lines." However, all species in this genus, with the exception of the species Hexagrammos otakii, actually have five lateral lines. It is said that the original namer, Jordan, who first discovered the greenling and assigned its scientific name in 1895, miscounted the lateral lines. If he had counted the lateral lines correctly at first, the genus name Pentagrammos, meaning "five lateral lines," would have been used. While there is a claim that four of the five lateral lines are non-functional and merely vestigial, the lateral lines of the genus Hexagrammos remain a mystery. The existence of hybrids; |

Underwater photo of Fat Greenling(Hexagrammos otakii). The camera angle was well-chosen to clearly show the fish's side profile while also allowing one to imagine its three-dimensional body shape. Perched on a rock(artificial structure), the fish has adapted its coloration to match the white, calcified surface, which has caused its belly to appear excessively pale. Fat greenling(Hexagrammos otaki). Underwater photo. The original photo description didn't explain the yellow color of this fish(Fat greenling). However, it's presumed to be the male's nuptial coloration. In the Fat greenling(Hexagrammos otakii), the male guards the egg clusters laid by the female on object until they hatch, and the bright yellow color serves as a warning to potential intruders. The nuptial colors of different species within the genus Hexagrammos vary, the golden yellow color appearing specifically in the Fat greenling. Location/sea of Japan. Author/Alexander Semenov. The caudal fin of Fat greenling(Hexagrammos otakii; left) is truncate, while that of Spotty belly greenling(Hexagrammos agrammus; right) is rounded like a fan. The differences in color and tail fin pattern in the two pictures are not due to two different species, but rather are one of several color variations. In other words, the fish on the left and the fish on the right could have their colors reversed. Left photo: Location/Korea. Author/희건(Hee-gun). Right photo: Location/China. Author/哈基米(Hajime). |
