[Tetrahedral body] A photo that clearly shows the body shape of seahorse in three dimensions. The trunk(below the head) and tail are tetrahedral, and are structured with multiple brick-shaped bony plates connected. Each seam has raised ridge border. Each bony plate is called “body ring”. The specimen in the photo is half dried. When alive, they often have flesh or protrusions and bellies are often swollen, so the angled edges of body can be seen unclearly. In particular, almost all photos are images of straight body side, so it is easy to perceive the body or tail as being round. The name of the seahorse in the photo is Big-belly seahorse(Hippocampus abdominalis), but the tetrahedral body characteristics applies to all seahorses regardless of species. |
Order Syngnathiformes Family Syngnathidae(pipefishes and seahorses) Distribution; Indo-Pacific/Distributed in the South Sea of Korea (Masan and Jinhae), southern Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Bali, Indonesia, Vanuatu, southeastern Australia, southeastern India, Gulf of Oman, and northern Red Sea. The Korean name "dae-hae-ma(대해마)" is a direct translation of the English name “Great seahorse”, it is not official Korean name, no official Korean name yet. The great seahorse (Hippocampus kelloggi), also known as Kellogg's seahorse. As the name "Great Seahorse" suggests, some explanations describe it as the largest species among seahorses, but this seems to be a long-ago record. It is appropriate to say that Great Seahorse is one of the few large species of seahorses. As of 2024, the largest seahorse is the Big-belly seahorse(Hippocampus abdominalis) with a record of 35 cm in total length, distributed in Australia and New Zealand, The body shape is unique, the head resembles a horse's head and the head and trunk forming an almost right angle. They can be identified through their comparatively slightly longer tails, which account for about 57% of their bodies. The head and body are slightly flat on the sides, and the dorsal surface is flat like a row of roof tiles connected together. And the tail after the dorsal fin is shaped like a square bar that composed of series of square bricks. The snout is shaped like a long tube, with a small mouth at tip of the snout. The snout tip is expanded. There are no teeth in the mouth. There are no spines in front of eye, and the spine on the top of eye have blunt end. The length of the snout is slightly shorter than the length between the posterior edge of eye and the origin of the pectoral fin. The coronet protrusion on the top of the head looks like ridge, low in height, slanted backwards, and has five spines Entire body is covered with bony rings, and each body ring has raised edges. The height of the upper and ventral plates of the trunk rings(part before the anal fin) is the same. The spines on the dorsal side have blunt ends and are short. The spines in the central part of trunk have blunt ends, but also defined as spines. The spines on the abdomen are developed but also not sharp. Pelvic and caudal fins absent. The anal fin is very small and rudimentary. The anal fin is located below the rear end of the dorsal fin base. Can use the slender posterior part of their long tail to hang by wrapping around seaweed stems. The pectoral fin is short. The base of the dorsal fin spans two body rings and one caudal ring. Males have a brood pouch on their abdomen which is located across 4-5 caudal body rings behind the anus. There are no spines on the brood pouch. The body color varies, from yellow, brown to black. In often cases, adults with distinctive fine white lines and tiny spots, appears especially clearly in dark areas. Juveniles and female sometimes cream or yellow, often with pale saddles or blotches. The pectoral and anal fins are transparent. They frequent areas with an abundance of coral or seaweeds so they can latch on to something. Although it is often found in shallow water, it is also found at depths of over 100 m, and is found at a maximum depth of 152 m, making it the deepest seahorse recorded.. In addition, the giant sea horse can be found in brackish waters. Feed mainly on small invertebrates. It is generally found alone or in very sparse groups. It is known that spawning occurs all year round in tropical waters such as Vietnam, but in Korea, spawning occurs mainly between June and September. They live for two to four years in the wild. Reproduction/The moment the female deposits 500 eggs into the male's brood sac, the eggs are fertilized, where they hatch and grow. The male's gestation lasts a few weeks, and when the hatched chicks are developed enough to live independently, they are spit out one by one out of the brood pouch. Generally, males are ready to breed again almost immediately after giving birth. Though little is known about the great seahorse's specific breeding habits, many related seahorses have been studied and were found to occasionally be monogamous. Their mating ritual involves twisting their tails and head nods, until they find a partner. Captivity and use/Like many other species of seahorse, the great seahorse is used both medicinally and for aquariums. It's one of the harder types to purchase and care for, as it is large and does not compete well with others for food, often resulting in early death. One of the major reasons the great seahorse is removed from captivity is due to its medicinal effects in China and other east Asian countries. It is said to help with problems such as impotence, and its prevalence on the market has increased in recent years. Aside from personal aquariums and medicine, the great seahorse is also used as a souvenir, often available dried for people to take home. The combination of these three has led the great seahorse to be labeled as vulnerable. |
