Lateral view of Black wing flyingfish(irundichthys rondeletii) |
Order Beloniformes Family Exocoetidae(Flyingfishes) Distribution; [Worldwide ocean] Atlantic/from Portugal as far south as Namibia and some times South Africa, Mediterranean, from Massachusetts as far south to Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, southern Brazil and Argentina, Indo-Pacific/South Sea of Korea, Hainan Island of China, Micronesia, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Southeast Australia and Tasmania Island, New Zealand, Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, and from California south to Chile. Dorsal fin low. The anal origin slightly before, or 1-2 rays behind dorsal-fin origin. The pectoral fin length is 1/1.3 to 1/1.4 of the standard length. The first and second ray of pectoral fin are unbranched and clearly shorter than third ray. Pectoral fin reaches past anal fin base. Dorsal fin usually with fewer or equal number of rays to anal. Pelvic fin length is 1/2.8 to 1/3.4 of body length and situated closer to the rear margin of gill cover than to base of the tail. Or, pelvic origin nearer anal origin than pectoral base, fin long, reaching past anal origin. The length of pelvic fin is shorter than that of other flying fishes, and the rear end reaches to the vicinity of the third soft rays of the anal fin. Pelvic fins usually without black spot. Caudal fin deeply forked with a much longer lower lobe; Scales large, smooth, easily shed. Scales in transverse row 6 to 7.5. The lateral line is located low close to the ventral outline, no branch to origin of pectoral. Body color is dark, iridescent blue dorsally and pale, silvery ventrally. The dorsal and caudal fins are greyish, the anal fin is transparent, pectoral fins are black with a thin, pale outer margin. Juveniles do not have beards, and juveniles less than 5 cm(standard length) have translucent and light brown bodies with very small black specks scattered on the body, and each fin has one or two black blotch or spots on transparent background. Pelagic, oceanodromous species which inhabits the surface waters. It is able to leap out of the water and glide for considerable distances over the surface. Its diet consist of zooplankton. The egg mass has adhesive filaments that stick to objects. This species is considered to be on no importance in fisheries. |

Dead specimen of Black wing flyingfish(Hirundichthys rondeletii). Based on the ruler below, the body length (excluding the caudal fin) seems to exceed 25 cm. Author/Villalba, D.O. Creative Commons Attribution 3.0

Incomprehensible description of flyingfish. ※ In above 2 depictions of Black wing flyingfish(Hirundichthys rondeletii), the fish has a strange long appendage at posterior part of pelvic fin as if it is a part of the pelvic fin. No description of Hirundichthys rondeletii having such additional appendage is found in any other text or image. These illustrations are officially published on the site of the prestigious National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in the United States. It is described as a record of fish collected in 1902 during the Hawaiian Explorations of the Steamer Albatross. If I had to guess, I'd say the first illustration was drawn first and then something happened that required an image of just the fish with the background removed, so the illustration below was redrawn. However, in the illustration below, the origin of the anal fin is too far back. The scientific name at the time of collection was recorded as “Exonautes gilbert”, which was later revised and changed to “Hirundichthys rondeletii”. This illustration would have been drawn as it was after seeing the object in collected state. Could this be a parasite or a parasitic fish? I wonder why the Smithsonian Natural History Museum didn't explain it.
