(Sargassumfish) Histrio histrio(Linnaeus, 1758) → Family 228

Notice for only Korean/Among the official Korean common names in Family Antennariidae(frogfishes), there are two species that named after colors; Yellow frogfish(Histrio histrio) and Red frogfish(Antennarius striatus). The frogfishes can change colors like a magician, so names with colors in their names cause great confusion even to fish enthusiasts. When naming a fish that changes color at will, color should not be included in the name. Once an official Korean name is decided, it is almost impossible to change it. Readers should know this first and access frogfish knowledge. ※ More information in page of Family Antennariidae(Frogfishes).

Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/South Africa, Red Sea, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Réunion and Mauritius, tropical Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand, Tonga, Moluccas, southern Papua New Guinea, Guam, Taiwan, Philippines, Mariana Islands, Japan, south sea(Jeju Island) of Korea. Occurrence in the eastern Pacific remains problematic. Northwest Atlantic/Canada. Western Atlantic: Gulf of Maine to the mouth of the Rio de la Plata, Uruguay. Eastern Atlantic: Azores and off West Africa; record from Vardø, northern Norway is based on a straggler taken northward by the North Atlantic and Norwegian currents.

General; The only species in its genus. The scientific name comes from the Latin histrio meaning a stage-player or actor, and refers to the fish's feeding behaviour. It is laterally compressed. Body short and globose; mouth large with many small, villiform teeth. This fish has a dorsal fin divided into four parts. The most anterior part is the "fishing rod and lure" comprising the illicium and esca. This is followed by two separate spines and finally by a long-based soft-rayed portion. The front spine of head is modified into a slender growth on the upper lip known as an illicium, which is tipped by a fleshy lump(esca). Illicium attains less than half of second dorsal-fin spine. The junction between the head and body is indistinct because there are no gill slits, the gills opening as pores near the base of the pectoral fins. The large pelvic fins and the pectoral fin rays are stalked and able to grip objects. Limb-like pectoral fins with an "elbow" joint, that fin not connected to body. Pelvic fins long (>25% of SL); with a tail base. The top and bottom ray of the caudal fin are unbranched, and all others are branched.

The color of the body is very variable, but is usually olive to yellowish(pale cream) to brown, with numerous white flecks and often dark brown mottlings. Fins often have several dark streaks or bands. The fish can change colour rapidly, from light to dark and back again. The body and the fins are covered with many weed-like protrusions(skin flaps), but unlike most other shallow-water anglerfishes the skin of the Sargassum Anglerfish is smooth rather than prickly. When it escapes from floating seaweed pile and floats in empty water space close to the surface, or when hiding against a background of something close to white on the bottom(such as corals or sponges), the body turns translucent white.

Epipelagic. Found near the surface, usually associated with floating objects or Sargassum. Found near shore and occasionally among floating seaweeds. Commonly blown into shore and bay waters during storms. It stalks its prey among the tangled weeds, relying on its cryptic camouflage for concealment. It can clamber through and cling to the seaweed stalks with its prehensile pectoral fins. It dangles its esca as a fishing lure to attract small fish, shrimps, and other invertebrates. It is able to dart forward to grab its prey by expelling water forcibly through its gill openings. It can expand its mouth to many times its original size in a fraction of a second, drawing prey in via suction, and can swallow prey larger than itself. A solitary or loose groups among floating seaweed.

Oviparous. Eggs are bound in ribbon-like sheath or mass of gelatinous mucus called 'egg raft' or 'veil'. During courtship, the male follows the female closely then both rush to the surface to spawn. At this point, eggs are produced in a gelatinous floating mass or 'raft' and inseminated by the male. The eggs remain embedded in this raft until hatching. This fish is preyed on by larger fish and sea birds. To avoid underwater threats, it can jump out of the water onto the top of  algal mat. It can survive for some time out of water.

The floating seaweeds they mainly rely on are the brown seaweeds “Sargassum natans” and “Sargassum Fluitans,” which live luxuriantly in the Sargasso Sea of the West Indies. However, in Australia, Sargassumfish has been found hiding in red algae(Acanthophora spicifera) that grow on submerged root surface of red mangrove trees, and in Belize in the Caribbean, Sargassumfish has been found hiding in green algae(Ulva lactuca) grown on the surface of submerged tree roots. In other words, the Sargassumfish lives not only in floating seaweeds, but also in attached seaweeds, and in red seaweed case, the body color may be red.(source///https://www.usgs.gov/publications/ sargassum-frogfish -histrio-histrio –linnaeus -observed-mangroves-st-john -us-virgin/ December 25, 2011). Also, photos of white Sargassumfish hiding in near-white coral, taken in Indonesia, also found. It is a fish that changes color depending on the object it uses for concealment.
