D/spine 13, soft ray 9, A/spine 2, soft ray 6. P1/soft ray 17~18. P2/spine 1, soft ray 5.

이 물고기의 외형을 나타낸 유일한 약식 그림 이미지는 2002년 일본의 Tokai University Press가 발행한 “Fishes of Japan”, 부제; ‘with pictorial keys to the species, Englsh edition, Edited by Tetsuji Nakabo” 에 있다. 논문 제목은 “Range Extension of a Poorly Known Fish Species Hoplosebastes Armatus Schmidt, 1929(Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae) from the Northwest Pacific to the Indian Ocean”이며 논문 저자들은 Sanmitra Roy, Dipanjan Ray, Ankita Mishra, Anil Mohapatra 이상 4명이다.

D/spine 13, soft ray 9, A/spine 2, soft ray 6. P1/soft ray 17~18. P2/spine 1, soft ray 5. 새조골/7, Lateral line scale/24, vert/24.

Distribution; Indo-Northwestern Pacific/Jeju Island in Korea, south of central Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, northeastern part of Indian Peninsula (northwestern Bay of Bengal; Digha, Paradip).
General; This is the only known member of the genus Hoplosebastes. Body long and oval, with laterally compressed body and head. The head is large and with developed spines. The eyes are located upper side of head but do not protrude beyond the dorsal line. The mouth is large and slightly oblique, with the anterior ends of the lower and upper jaws ending at almost the same level. The posterior end of the upper jaw extends below the posterior margin of eye. The upper jaw is covered with scales. Small teeth on both jaws and the vomer, and the teeth on the palatine bone are vestigial. With five spines on the preopercle and two spines on posterior opercle. There are strong spines lined up on the bridge of the nose, above the eyes, and on parietal. A line of strong spines extending from upper posterior margin of eye to the lateral line.

The spine part and soft ray part of the dorsal fin are continuous. The origin of the dorsal fin is much farther forward than the posterior end of the gill cover. The membranes of the dorsal fin spines are not deeply indented. The length of the spines of the dorsal fin spines starts low in front and becomes parabolic, then shortens. The last spine is longer than the previous one. The longest spine of dorsal fin is the same length as the longest soft ray of dorsal fin. The anal fin consists of 2 spines and 6 soft rays, with the first spine being devoid and short. The base length of anal fin is shorter than that of soft ray part of dorsal fin. The length of the pectoral fin exceeds the origin of the anal fin, and the margin is rounded. There is no branched ray on the pectoral fin. The pelvic fin is located below pectoral fin. The caudal fin is standard type and rounded at the back. The anus is located behind the middle of the body. The head and the entire body except the lower part of the head are covered with scales. The gill covers on both sides are fused at the isthmus. The lateral line is complete and is tilted toward the dorsal side in the front, but reaches the central line toward the caudal fin.

In dead specimens, the head and body are pale red orange, and the ventral side is light yellowish-brown to white. There are 3-4 dark stripes radiating from the center of the eyes. There are about 6 vertical stripes on body side, the most anterior one is behind the head, and the most posterior one is on the caudal fin. The spines of the dorsal fin are red and have scattered spots. The dorsal, pectoral, anal, and caudal fins are light red and have scattered dark spots. It lives on the bottom around the continental shelf.

[Remarks] There is no data showing its exact appearance.(Contents linked to Figure 1,2,3 introduced below)
The Flowery scorpionfish is a very rare fish with limited distribution area. The scientific name of   Flowery scorpionfish, “Hoplosebastes armatus” was named based on a single specimen(holotype) collected in Japan in 1929. However, the description of the characteristics of this fish was very poor. The only simplified pictorial image showing the appearance of this fish is in the book, “Fishes of Japan” published by Tokai University Press in Japan in 2002, subtitled; [with pictorial keys to the species, English edition, Edited by Tetsuji Nakabo]. There are some images of the Flowery scorpionfish drawn by ichthyologist in Taiwan and Korea, but almost all of them are imitations of the simplified illustration of the Flowery scorpionfish in Tetsuji Nakabo’s “Fishes of Japan”. Recently, 24 specimens of Flowery scorpionfish were collected from the northeastern waters of India (northwestern Bay of Bengal) and studied by Indian scholars, and a paper was published in April 2022(www.researchgate.net). The title of the paper is “Range Extension of a Poorly Known Fish Species Hoplosebastes Armatus Schmidt, 1929(Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae) from the Northwest Pacific to the Indian Ocean” and the authors of the paper are Sanmitra Roy, Dipanjan Ray, Ankita Mishra, and Anil Mohapatra.

If you compare the illustration in Fishes of Japan with the photos attached to the 2022 paper of Indian scholars, the body shape is quite different. For example, in the illustrated image of “Fishes of Japan”,  the head is large but much smaller than the rest body(trunk), whereas in photos of the paper, the head is larger than the trunk, and the description also acknowledges this. Next, the location of dorsal fin origin, in case of illustrated specimen, is above the tip of the gill cover margin, but in case of the photos in the paper, the origin is much further in front of the tip of the gill cover. Although the basic color is read as red in photographed specimens, but the ground color has faded over time since it died, and the patterns have almost all disappeared, leaving only faint traces. The pattern of illustrated specimen is also Ambiguous and unclear. The dots and patterns in my detailed drawing introduced on this page are created by guesswork.I referred to patterns of other congeners. Therefore, the coloring or pattern of my work may be different from the facts, and is currently impossible to coloring it close to reality unless the undiscolored specimen or a photo in live phase is found.

The specimens in Photo A and Photo B have a larger head than their bodies, and the location of the dorsal fin origin is much further forward.

[Figure 3].

One more depiction of Flowery scorpionfish. The date of specimen collection and drawing is 1908. It is described as a drawing of the specimen collected in Hong Kong during an Expedition of the waters around the Philippines(1907-1910) by the US oceanographic research vessel Albatross. At the time, the scientific name was determined to be Hoplosebastes pristigenys, but it was later treated as a synonym of Hoplosebastes armatus(Flowery scorpion fish). However, this drawing is different from both the Nakabo’s depiction and the Indian Ocean specimens, so it is confusing whether it is real a synonym or not. Image source/ Smithsonian Institution
