• Hozukius emblemarius(D. S. Jordan & Starks, 1904). Hozuki rockfish,
• Hozukius guyotensis(Barsukov & Fedorov, 1975). Seamount rockfish(씨마운트 락피시)

Distribution; Northwest Pacific/from Iwate Pref. southward to Kyushu, Japan. Ulsan in the East Sea of southern Korea.
General; The genus Hozukius is native to the northwestern Pacific, with only two species, both species are described as being rare.

• Hozukius emblemarius(D. S. Jordan & Starks, 1904). Hozuki rockfish, 동해큰눈볼락(Korean name).
• Hozukius guyotensis(Barsukov & Fedorov, 1975). Seamount rockfish.

Hozuki rockfish(Hozukius emblemarius) is distributed from Iwate Pref. south to Kyushu in Japan. Has been known as endemic to Japan.  In 2014, one specimen was collected and reported to the academic community in Korea(Park et al.). The another specimen; seamount rockfish(Hozukius guyotensis(Japanese name/ベニメヌケ; Benimenuke) is distributed in the Emperor Seamounts in the high sea far in the Pacific Ocean.

The genus name is probably derived from hozuki, the Japanese name for the flowering plant Physalis alkekengi(Ground cherry), which has bright red or orange fruit and is a traditional component of Japanese Buddhist culture, its bright-red colour being similar to that of H. emblemarius. The Ground cherry is used as one of the decorations in the Obon event(Japanese Obon;お盆, August 15th in the solar calendar), a traditional Japanese Buddhist culture.

Hozuki rockfish(Hozukius emblemarius) was announced as a Korean species in 2014 after studying a single specimen(196.4 mm standard length) collected in a bottom trawling net from the coastal waters off the coast of Ulsan in the East Sea of southern Korea.

The body is deep and oval, tapering posteriorly. Many sharp spines on head. 3 triangular spines under the eyes. The eyes are large and protruding. The snout is short, and the posterior end of the upper jaw reaches below the middle of the eye. Small teeth on both jaws and vomer. The gill slits are wide and extend to the lower abdomen. Spines of fins are strong. The dorsal fin is notched between the spines part and the soft ray part. 4th dorsal spine the longest. Posterior margin of pectoral fin rounded with the upper two rays being unbranched, the middle seven rays being branched, and the lower nine rays being unbranched. All the soft rays of the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins are branched. The rear end of the pectoral fin reaches the origin of the anal fin. The rear end of the pelvic fin reaches the anus, which is just in front of the anal fin. The lateral line is curved. Posterior margin of caudal fin truncate. The entire head including snout, maxilla and lower jaw is covered with scales of various sizes, and the scales on the gill cover are larger than those on the cheek.

Color of specimen. When fresh, body and fins overall bright red; pupil deep black. After fixation, body uniformly light brown, opercle dark, brown dot dorsally, margin of membrane at spine part of dorsal fin dark.

Hozukius emblemarius lives in deep water rocky areas. Viviparous fish. It is known to live in waters as deep as 250~900m, but the individual found in Korea(Ulsan) was found in much shallower waters, at a depth of 140m. According to an article in the Japanese food industry, it is said to have white flesh, high-quality fat content, and the taste is the best of all fish.
