Distribution; Asia/Native to most major Pacific dainages of East Asia from Amur to Xi Jiang, China. China and Eastern Siberia. Introduced around the world for aquaculture and control of algal blooms. Several countries report adverse ecological impact after introduction. Often confused with Hypophthalmichthys nobilis.
General; Native to China and eastern Siberia. The silver carp reaches an average length of 60–100 cm with a maximum length of 140 cm. Has been imported to Korea from Japan for aquaculture, in 1963, 1967, 1968, 1974,  respectively, but failed in settlement due to environment not fit to Silver carp. The Chinese character “鰱” used in Silver carp’s name means the salmon, this Chinese character is commonly used in Korean and Japanese version of the fish name. This causes sometimes misunderstanding as if this fish is a kind of salmon.

Silver carp has deep body depth, laterally compressed. With big head, small eye located slightly below the head center, mouth slanted upwards. Absent in barbels. Body covered with cycloid scales. Lateral line complete, curved down at the anterior portion, rise upward posteriorly and go straight to caudal fin base. With a ridgeline at abdomen, reaches anus. Greenish brown dorsally, silvery white ventrally. Margins of pectoral and pelvic fins with yellowish hue. In spawning season. both sex with cloudy dark brown patterns.

Inhabit lower reaches of streams, lakes and reservoirs that connected to streams. Swimming just beneath the surface. Feed mainly on phytoplankton and zooplankton. Bigger individuals from about 1.5 cm SL feed only on phytoplankton while larvae and small juveniles prey on zooplankton. With fast growth rate. The largest record in Korea was 137cm TL.

Spawn in June to July. Mature individuals undertake long distance upriver migration for spawning at start of a rapid flood and water-level increase, able to leap over obstacles up to 1 m.  Spawn in upper water layer or even at surface during floods when the water level increases by 50-120 cm above normal level. Spawning ceases if conditions change(especially sensitive to water-level fall) and resumes again when water level increases, eggs then drift downstream, and young fish hatch in the floodplain zone, settle in floodplain lakes, shallow shores and backwaters with little or no current.  Larvae and small juveniles feed on zooplankton, switching to phytoplankton once a certain size is reached. After spawning, adults migrate to foraging habitats, In autumn, adults move to deeper places in main course of river where they remain without feeding.

Utilized fresh for human consumption and also introduced to many countries where its ability to clean reservoirs and other waters of clogging algae is appreciated even more than its food value.
