Dotted gizzard shad
Konosirus punctatus(Temminck  &  Schlegel, 1846). 32.0 cm TL.
Korean name/Jeon-eo(전어)
Japanese name/konoshiro
D/spines 0, soft ray 12-16. A/spines 0, soft rays 17-23. Lateral belly scute/32~37. Vertebrae/48 – 50. GR(L)/164-279.

Distribution; Northwestern Pacific/Coasts of Korean Peninsula, especially abundant in west southern coasts of south Korea, Yellow Sea, including Gulf of Pohai and East China Sea south to Taiwan Island and Hong Kong. Japan north to Vladivostok.
General; The gizzard shad is so named because it possesses a gizzard, a sack filled with rocks or sand, that aids the animal in the breakdown of consumed food. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Konosirus. 2 congeners that very similar to Konosirus punctatus are Chinese gizzard shad(Clupanodon thrissa) and Japanese gizzard shad(Nematalosa japonica). Oval in shape with deep depth, rounded belly, and strongly compressed. Snout short and blunt. Upper and lower jaw similar in length. The front center of upper jaw concaved upward and contrarily the lower jaw protruded upward; when closed the mouth, both jaws mesh as like sawtooth structure, thus front view of mouth is “∧” shape. Eye covered with transparent eyelid. Gill rakers thin, long and large in numbers. The last soft ray of dorsal fin extended like a long thread. Scales large and deciduous. With 32 to 37 keeled scutes from isthmus to anus; no pre-dorsal scutes.

Blue or dark blue dorsally, silvery white ventrally. A large dark spot behind upper opercula. Several dark lateral lines on upper body side, a dark spot within each scales makes out these stripe patterns. Fins with yellow color in life.

Coastal fish. Live offshore waters in summer, migrate to bays, estuaries and even fresh water arrears. Prefers rather turbid water with abundant organic materials. Schools in groups of moderate numbers. Feed mainly on phytoplankton including small crustaceans and algae. Spawn in March to July in lower reaches of rivers. Eggs are pelagic. Individuals apparently spawn twice or more during the season. A female spawns 100,000~140,000 eggs. Hatchlings grow to adult hood in a year, life span about 3 years.

This is a food fish of some commercial importance, particularly in Asia. In Korea, these fish are a seasonal specialty and consumed in a wide variety of ways including raw, grilled, dried, etc. There are several "Jeon-eo" regional festivals in fall which attract large crowds. There are several proverbs or sayings in Korea; one of them goes as “the taste of ‘Dotted gizzard shad’ in autumn will make a runaway bride come back’. It is known as "Konoshiro"(コノシロ) in Japan. Konosirus punctatus is also an important fish consumed in China, Japan.
