분포; 인도•태평양/제주도 포함 남해, 일본 중부 이남, 서태평양, 오스트렐리아, 하와이, 투아모토 섬, 홍해, 동아프리카 포함 인도양에 분포.
일반개요; 몸색은 흑회색 또는 청회색 또는 회갈색이며 지느러미들은 거무스레하다. 비늘의 중심부가 밝아서 비늘열을 따라 줄무늬가 생기는데 노성어가 될수록 줄무늬는 희미해진다. 아가미뚜껑 가장자리가 검다. 꼬리지느러미는 안으로 완만하게 패였다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 연조부 앞부분이 넓게 확장되었다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 연조부 기점에서 체형의 외곽선이 급하게 좁아진다. 머리의 등선이 눈 앞쪽에서 튀어나왔다. 소수 또는 다수의 무리를 지으며 1~45m 수심의 산호초, 바위 암초 지대 저층에 산다. 조류를 주식한다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific: South Sea including Jeju Island in Korea, south of central Japan, western Pacific, Australia, Hawaii, Tuamoto Islands, Indian Ocean including East Africa and Red Sea.
General: Dark grey, bulish grey or brownish grey in body color. Fins dusky. Upper and lower edges of scale dusky, resulting in a pattern of longitudinal dark lines, dark lines indistinct in old adults. Opercular membrane dark. Anterior parts of soft-rayed portion of dorsal and anal fins elevated. Caudal fin slightly forked. Body abruptly tapering at origins of soft-rayed portion of dorsal and anal fins. Dorsal profile of head with a protuberance anterior to upper part of eye. Form small to large groups. Coral reefs or rocky substrata in 1~45m depth. Feeds on algae.
