일반개요;

① Lampris australensis(Southern spotted opah)/Southern hemisphere, in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
② Lampris guttatus(North Atlantic opah)/formerly thought to be cosmopolitan, but now thought to be restricted to the northeastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea.
③ Lampris immaculatus(southern opah)/confined to the Southern Ocean from 34° S to the Antarctic Polar Front./남반구의 남위 34° S 에서부터 남쪽으로 남극해 전방 까지 분포.
④ Lampris incognitus(smalleye Pacific opah)/central and eastern North Pacific Ocean.
⑤ Lampris lauta(East Atlantic opah)/eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean, Azores and Canary Islands.
⑥ Lampris megalopsis(bigeye Pacific opah; 붉평치?)/cosmopolitan, including the Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean, the western Pacific Ocean and Chile.

Lampris megalopsis]

Distribution: Cosmopolitan, in tropical and warm temperate seas/the Gulf of Mexico(Atlantic Ocean), southwest coast of South Africa(Indian Ocean), the western Pacific Ocean(American Samoa, Australia, Indonesia, sea of Japan and central east coast of Korea), central northern Pacific, and Chile(Southeast Pacific).
General; A study of a specimen(standard length 705mm) collected by a stationary net set in water of central east coast of Korea in November 2014, confirmed that the specimen is “Lampris guttatus”, and an unrecorded species in Korea. This is the first species even in Family Lampridae(Opahs) in Korea. However, after the Korean taxonomic study in 2014, a new taxonomic review in 2018 found that more should be recognized(the result of splitting L. guttatus into 5 species). As a result of examining various foreign data, I come to conclusion that the Korean species name should be changed to Lampris megalopsis(Bigeye Pacific opah), and the contents of this page edited accordingly. As I am not a scholar, I hope that readers not accept my judgment as absolute.

Species list of Family Lampridae(Opahs).
① Lampris australensis(Southern spotted opah)/Southern hemisphere, in the Pacific and Indian oceans..
② Lampris guttatus(North Atlantic opah)/formerly thought to be cosmopolitan, but now thought to be restricted to the northeastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea.
③ Lampris immaculatus(southern opah)/confined to the Southern Ocean from 34° S to the Antarctic Polar Front.
④ Lampris incognitus(smalleye Pacific opah)/central and eastern North Pacific Ocean.
⑤ Lampris lauta(East Atlantic opah)/eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean, Azores and Canary Islands. ※ often unaccepted, described as synonym of Lampris guttatus
⑥ Lampris megalopsis(bigeye Pacific opah; 붉평치?)/cosmopolitan, including the Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean, the western Pacific Ocean and Chile.

Description; Lampris megalopsis, commonly known as the opah, cravo, moonfish, kingfish, and Jerusalem haddock, is a large, colorful, deep-bodied pelagic lampriform fish belonging to the family Lampridae, which comprises the genus Lampris.

Body laterally compressed and rounded. The large eyes stand out as well, ringed with golden yellow. The snout is pointed and the mouth small, toothless, and terminal. The body is covered in minute cycloid scales and its silvery, iridescent guanine coating is easily abraded. Caudal fin broadly lunate; pectorals long and falcate; pelvic fins similar to pectoral fins in shape and a little longer. . Dorsal and anal fins have corresponding grooves into which they can be depressed. Swims by flapping the pectoral fins.

Jaws protractible and lacking teeth; upper jaw shorter than lower jaw; lower jaw protrudes slightly forward of upper jaw, the tip narrowing to a blunt point; throat and palate without teeth. Lateral line angled above gill opening, arching above pectoral fins, and extending along mid-height of body through center of caudal peduncle. Scales small, thin, and easily removed over entire body.

Its greatest depth contained 1.5 times in standard length; head length contained 2.8(2.8) times in standard length; vertical eye diameter contained 4.7 (4.5–4.7) times in head length; Dorsal fin comparatively short, the length of its base contained 1.8 (1.8) times in standard length, its height contained 3.2 (2.7–3.2) in standard length. Origin of pelvic fin below or anterior to middle of elongated portion of dorsal fin, its length contained 2.5 (2.5) times in SL

Lampris megalopsis is very similar to L. incognitus with which it shares a small portion of its range. The most obvious difference is in the size of the eye. In L. megalopsis , the horizontal eye diameter is typically> 5.0 % FL and is contained ~4.7 times in head length. In L. incognitus , the horizontal eye diameter is typically <5.0 % FL and vertical eye diameter is contained ~5.4 times in head length.

Coloration. Dark steely blue dorsally shading into green with silver and purple iridescence, belly rosy, golden around eyes. Fins deep red. Jaws are vermillion, too. In dead specimens(unpreserved), body steel grey on dorsal surface fading to bright silver on ventral surface. Irregular white spots distributed over entire body, including fins, head, and chest. In preserved specimens, body dark grey with spots and median fins appearing yellowish tan.

Oceanic and apparently solitary. Epi- and mesopelagic. Feeds on midwater fishes and invertebrates, mainly squids. Probably spawns in the spring. It is occasionally caught in deep nets targeting big-eye tuna. Considered a good food fish; marketed fresh and frozen; prepared as sashimi. Much is still unknown about the distribution, interactions, life histories, and preferred habitats of this fish

[Endothermy]. According to a 2015 study, before the 2018 when the Lampris guttatus was subdivided into 5 species, lampris guttatus was discovered to have near-whole-body endothermy in which the entire core of the body is maintained at around 5 °C above the surrounding water. This is unique among fish as most fish are entirely cold blooded or are capable of warming only some parts of their bodies.
