Distribution; Asia/all over the Korean Peninsula, Northern Chian, Mongolia and Siberia. Introduced into Japan.
General; The name “쌀미꾸리” in Korean language is a compound word of 쌀(rice) and 미꾸리(Asian weather loach in family Cobitidae), but this fish is not a member of Cobitidae. Lefua costata is the smallest species among its’ Korean loach congeners. Usually 5∼6cm, max. 9.8 cm. Body slender and elongated; cylindrical anteriorly and compressed posteriorly. Body length usually shorter than Asian weather loach(미꾸리).

Head slightly depressed. Mouth placed below snout and directed downward. Inter-nostril space broad; posterior nostril placed at the anterior margin of orbit, anterior nostril placed at the middle between snout tip and anterior margin of orbit. With 2 pairs of barbels; one pair in front of nostrils, 3 pairs on upper lip.

Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw. Eye located on upper side of head center. Inter orbital space broad and flat. Absent in suborbital spine. Without lateral line. Scales embedded under scale; not seen externally. Dorsal fin small with rounded margin and its’ origin placed behind pelvic fin. Pelvic fin smaller than the rest fins. Anal fin similar to dorsal fin in shape, but slightly smaller. Pectoral fin with rounded margin and placed hard on gill opening. Male absent in lamina circularis in pectoral fin that other congeners usually have. Caudal fin large with rounded margin.

Brown in ground color, light ventrally. With scattered small dark blotches on body in some specimens and some other specimens without. A broad dark stripe along the flank from sout tip to base of caudal fin. This stripe is distinct in male and indistinct or absent in females. Small indistinct spots scattered on dorsal and caudal fins.

Inhabit weedy mud bottoms in shallow and slow flowing streams in lakes, swamps, farm waterways. Feed mainly on larvae of insects, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and plant seeds. Spawn in April to June. Lay eggs in morning; attach eggs onto water weeds. Body color showy in spawning season. Distributes all around the Korean peninsula, but more abundant in eastern region and used for main materials for Chu-eo-tang(traditional loach soup) in corresponding area.
