학명의 종 소명 “abyssalis=abyssal”은 심연의 뜻이다.

Distribution; West Pacific/southern Korea, south of Hokkaido Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, Philippines, Vietnam, recently added New Caledonia. ※Reference & date/mapper.obis.org, 2022-11-12
General; Small fish. Body is elongated, cross section is laterally compressed oval, and becomes thinner posteriorly. Head with bony plate. Interocular septum wide and concave, with 1 transverse groove(notch) at posterior edge. The body height is highest at the origin of the pelvic fin. ventral side of body is almost straight. The preorbital bones have developed into two flattened rostrums, which has the function of plowing the soil.

Snout is nearly triangular when viewed from side, length of snout is about equal to eye diameter. Eyes large, round, upper side of eyeball almost reaching the dorsal edge of the head. Interocular distance slightly smaller than eye diameter. Two nostrils, close to each other, about in the middle of the snout, the front nostrils are small and round; the back nostrils are slightly larger and slit-shaped. The mouth is large, and cleft is oblique. The upper jaw is more protruding than the lower jaw, and the upper jaw is not exposed and does not reach below the front edge of the eye. The upper and lower jaws have villiform teeth, the vomer teeth are sparse, and the palatine bones are toothless. Thin lips. The tongue is wide and round, and the front end is slightly free. Gill cover membrane separated, not connected with isthmus.

2 dorsal fins, spaced less than eye diameter. The first dorsal fin is located above the rear edge of the operculum, with a shorter base, the second dorsal fin base is about 2.1 times as long as the first dorsal fin base, and the rear end of the fin rays does not reach the caudal fin base. The first to third fin spines have fine serrations on the front edge. The second spine of first dorsal fin is the longest, and the last spine about as long as the eye diameter. The first ray of second dorsal fin is spine. The base of the dorsal fin has 22-24 spinous plates on both sides, the front plate is wider and the spines are lower and blunt; the rear plate is narrower and the spines are sharper.

Anal fin without spines. The starting point of anal fin is about below the front end of the second dorsal fin, the base is about the same length as the second dorsal fin, the fin rays are about the same length as the second dorsal fin, and the rear end of the fin rays does not reach the base of the caudal fin. The rear edge of the caudal fin is mildly concave or truncated.

The pectoral fin is oblong, reaching above the fourth to fifth anal fin rays. The lower part of the pectoral fin has 3 finger-like free fin rays, which are used for crawling on the bottom of the water and digging for food. The upper part of the pectoral fin is wing-shaped and can be spread out to glide in the water. The first free fin ray is the lowest, long, and extending to posterior end of pelvic fin, the second and third free fin rays gradually shortening.

Medium to large scales, ctenoid scales, imbricate arrangement. The abdomen is round scales. Head without scales. Thorax without scales. All fins without scales. The lateral line is on the upper side, oblique and straight, extending to the base of the caudal fin. Swim bladder large, oval.

Dorsal side of body is vivid red, becomes pale from the center, and the belly side is white, without markings on head and body. The inner edge of the pectoral fin is brown, the center is yellow-green. Outer side of pectoral fin is greyish white. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are light red, without markings. Pelvic fin whitish.

Occurs where the bottom is mixed with sand and mud at a depth of 60 to 415 m, and found mostly around the continental shelf. Feeds mainly on invertebrates. Oviparous, floating eggs. The spawning period in the East China Sea is from January to March. By-caught by low-level trawling, quantity is small and has little economic value. (National Animal Collection Resource Center/China)
