[Difference in position of dorsal fins between Lestrolepis intermedia and Lestrolepis japonica]
These two species are similar to each other, including the characteristic black spot in front of the eye, making it difficult to distinguish them, but there is a difference in the location of dorsal fin. Origin of dorsal fin of Lestrolepis intermedia at middle between posterior end of pelvic fin base and origin of anal fin. Origin of dorsal fin of Lestrolepis japonica before middle between posterior end of pelvic fin base and origin of anal fin. <Illustrated by fishillust.com, Main reference; Fishes of Japan with pictorial keys to the species, English edition. Distribution; Indo-Western Pacific/South Africa Durban, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Gulf of Aden, southeast and southwest of India, Indonesia, western and northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Philippines, Taiwan southern and north central Japan, Jeju Island of South Korea.
General; Body Body elongate and slender, strongly compressed, depth at pectoral-fin 13–16% of SL. Caudal pecuncle shorter than eye diameter. Head moderately long and pointed, slightly triangular. Mouth terminate, moderately large, lower jaw slightly upturned at tip. Eye large, Interorbital space narrow. Caudal peduncle shorter than eye diameter. Lateral line incomplete, starting above the base of pectoral fin and ending at above about middle of anal-fin base. The scales are only on lateral line and not on the rest of body. Scales of lateral-line as high as it’s wide, gradually smaller and becoming narrower posteriorly.

A light organ in front of eye. A short luminescent duct along lower margin of orbit(inner side of first and second infraorbitals). Luminescent duct well developed at ventral abdomen cavity, originating from below pectoral fin and divided into two branches from its origin to anus. Four gill arches, all with gill filaments. The third and fourth arches mostly connected by membranes. Pseudobranchs present, inside a deep pocket.

The dorsal adipose fin is located above the rear end of base of anal fin. A narrow adipose fin on the ventral ridge between pectoral and pelvic fins. Between anus and anal fin, an ventral adipose fin developed.

Origin of dorsal fin of Lestrolepis japonica before middle between posterior end of pelvic fin base and origin of anal fin. Pectoral fin at same level as posterior margin of gill cover. The pelvic fin is in the middle of the body or slightly behind it. The origin of anal fin is at the beginning of the 4th segment when the body is divided into quarters.

Two or three small fangs at tip of upper jaw, followed by single row of small retrose teeth along upper jaw, gradually smaller on posterior portion. Vomerine teeth absent. Two rows of fangs on lower jaw, gradually smaller posteriorly, those in outer row short and fixed; those in inner row long, each with a knife-like tip, and depressible. Two rows of fangs on each palatine, those on outer row smaller than those on inner row. Teeth on tongue small and scattered, one row on each side. Teeth on pharyngeal arch slender, forming an ovoid patch with about five rows at middle.

Coloration. Body semitransparent when fresh, creamy white in preservation. A single black spot(papilla) immediately in front of eye. Upper fourth of body covered by tiny and dense chromatophores, extending to upper margin of lateral line ventrally. Chromatophores present on the surface of first to the third infraorbital bones, upper margin of eye, anterior three-fourths of upper jaw, and along upper margin of lower jaw. Bases of dorsal, pectoral, and anal-fin rays with black pigments. Abdominal adipose fin densely covered by small chromatophores. Luminescent duct silver white with black pigments on its upper surface(e.g. can be seen through the semitransparent muscle). Chromatophores present on inner gill chamber and branchiostegal rays; branchiostegal membranes colorless; gill arches blackish; and mouth cavity white. It is very common in the bycatch of midwater and bottom trawl, Most individuals feed on small fishes rather than shrimps

Lestrolepis japonica and Lestrolepis intermedia are common in the presence of a black spot in front of the eyes and two rows of luminescent ducts under the abdomen.
