Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790). 100cm(TL)
Korean. n. Baeg-mi-dom (백미돔)
Distribution: Circumglobal in tropical to warm temperate seas, including southern Korea.
General: Body and head compressed, deep depth, and small eyes. Dorsal profile of head steep, slightly concave above eye, preopercle serrated, opercle with 2 spines. Rounded posterior lobes of dorsal and anal fins extending well beyond base of caudal fin, this gives the impression, with the rounded caudal fin, of a 3 lobed tail. Adults usually mottled silvery gray. Juveniles and subadults may lie on their side (mimic a floating leaf) and match the color of material with which they are drifting from near black to yellow. Adult inhabits bays, muddy estuaries and lower reaches of large rivers, sometimes drift over reefs. Feeds on benthic crustaceans and small fishes.
