분포; 인도•서태평양/일본 류구열도, 서태평양, GBR, 인도양 동부에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 측편되었고 머리의 등은 경사가 완만하다. 측선 위 비늘열은 측선으로부터 위로 경사진다. 바탕색은 백색일 때가 많고 체측에 6개의 수평방향 갈색 줄무늬가 있으며 6~7개의 수직선 무늬가 몸의 반 등쪽에 체크무늬를 형성한다. 미병부 끝 중심에 검은 반점이 있다. 환경에 따라 바탕색은 백색에서 옅은 황갈색으로 변하고 줄무늬들도 어둡고 두꺼워진다. Halichores 속 놀래기류 중 줄무늬가 있는 종을 의태하여 먹이감에 몰래 접근한다. 2~30m 수심 산호초에 살며 보통 단독생활을 하지만 무리를 지을 때도 있다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/Eastern Indian Ocean, GBR, west Pacific north to Ryukyu Islands.
General: Body and head compressed, dorsal profile of head moderately sloped. Preopercular notch and knob poorly developed. Scale rows on back rising obliquely above lateral line. White undercolor with 6 brown stripes and 6~7 bars across back forming checker-board pattern on upper half of sides. Black spot on base of tail. Some variation in color with coastal forms having a more brownish look, rather then a clean black and white image. Usually solitair but may form schools at times. Inhabits inshore and offshore coral reefs. Mimic similar sized striped Halichoeres wrasses to sneak up on prey.
