※ 한국동물명집에서 ‘동갈퉁돔’의 학명을 “Lutjanus vitta”로 기록하고 있으나 세계적 공인 자료에서는 학명을 Lutjanus ophuysenii(영명: Spotstripe snapper)로 변경하였다. 본 사이트는 한국동물명집의 기준을 따르지 아니하고 Lutjanus ophuysenii 를 채택하였다. Lutjanus vitta는 참고용 국외종으로 따로 분류하여 Brownstripe snapper (브라운스트라이프 스내퍼)라는 영명으로 소개해 놓았다.

분포; 서북태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 중국, 타이완, 홍콩에 분포한다.
일반개요; 측선 위 등쪽의 비늘열은 위로 치켜 올라가며 이 열을 따라 약간 굽이쳐 보이는 줄무늬들이 있다. 검은 수평줄무늬가 주둥이에서부터 눈을 지나 미병부에까지 도달한다. 이 줄무늬는 폭이 크고 등지느러미 앞 연조부 측선 아래 위치에서 색이 까맣게 진해지는 부분이 있어서 ‘spotstripe snapper’란 영명을 가지고 있으나 이 검은 부분이 오히려 밝은 경우도 많다. 브라운스트라이프스내퍼(Brownstripe snapper: Lutjanus vitta)와 분류상으로 혼동을 일으켜왔다. 모든 지느러미는 노랗다. 전새개골 하부에 작은비늘이 없다(L. vitta는 작은비늘이 있다). 연안의 바위와 산호초 지대에 서식한다.

Distribution: Northwest Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, China, Taiwan to Hongkong.
General: Body and head compressed. Scale rows with dark brown color on back rising obliquely above lateral line. A brown to blackish broad mid-lateral stripe from snout to peduncle. All fins yellow. Posterior lower margin of preopercle without small scales. Probably an oval black blotch, lying in the middle of the stripe below last dorsal spines, only in juveniles. Lutjanus vitta replaced by Lutjanus ophuysenii from above distributing area. Inhabits the vicinity of rocky or coral reefs.
