Distribution; Asia/Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Viet Nam, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, and Korea.

※The 1977 Korean Fish Atlas(韓國魚圖譜; by Jung, Moon-Ki; Korea's first large fish atlas) states that the Macrognathus aculeatus of which Korean name is geol-jang-eo(걸장어), was distributed in Busan, and Yong-am-po(an estuary of the Yalu River in North Korea). Because of this old time record, "geol-jang-eo" has simply remained as Korean name until today. The current information on the National Institute of Fisheries Science(Korea's government agency for fishery) lists only the name, but informations including its distribution completely absent. This means that the current government research organization is hesitant to recognize the 1977 record. Also, as I explained in the "General" section below, there has been a lot of speciation over the meantime, so we cannot be sure that the "geol-jang-eo" in 1977 is still the Macrognathus aculeatus.

General; The first registered fish of the genus Macrognathus was the Lesser Spiny Eel(Macrognathus aculeatus) published in 1786. Afterwards, the number of species in Macrognathus increased by 9 in the 1800s, 5 in the 1900s, and 9 in the 2000s, for a total of 24 species(as of 2024). This shows that among the group known as A species, the occurrence of some being identified as B species, has been repeated frequently, especially in recent years. In addition, there may have been cases where fishes in genus Macrognathus were transferred to other genera. Confusion appears to be occurring because many existing documents remain without information revised to fit the new species classification. For example, in many books and scientific articles from Bengal and Bangladesh, Macrognathus aculeatus is classified as Macrognathus aral(One-stripe spinyeel). Due to the above confusion, my article below also not free from confusion.

With eel-like body. Mouth nonprotractile. Has long nose appendage with two tubulated nostrils. The dorsal fin is preceded by numerous(about 20) isolated small spines that can be raised, giving them the name. 2~3 isolated spine before anal fin. The dorsal and anal fins located far posterior body. The origin of the anal fin is slightly ahead of the origin of the dorsal fin, and the rear ends of both fins end at the same location. Dorsal and anal fins with a row of isolated spines followed by a long continuous soft portion, both fins extending to but not confluent with caudal fin. Pelvic fins absent. Caudal fin rounded.

Has an upper-body that is yellow, a black lateral line down the middle and the lower-body is usually a mix of white and brown. The eel has an upper-body that is yellow, a black line down the middle and the lower-body is usually a mix of white and brown. There are prominent eyespots along the base of the dorsal fin, but the number is not constant. It is not known whether the number of eyespots varies between species or occur in same species. There is no information about the number of eyespots.

They can grow up to 38 cm, but are usually smaller. They occur in medium to large-sized rivers. They are found in lowland wetlands and peats. They're crepuscular and nocturnal burrowers. They may prey on small fish. Produces a minimum of 1000 eggs. This is a species traded in the ornamental fish market. It is traded in Korea's ornamental fish market and is also sold as imported food fish.

Photo A and B above are photos of dead Lesser spiny eel(Macrognathus aculeatus) provided by the same photographer to “fishbase org.” The number of eyespots on the dorsal fin is 8 for A and 3 for B. It is unclear whether the number of eyespots varies within the same species or varies depending on the species. The confusion may be due to the species classification not being updated. These photos are from a person who contributes many photos to "fishbase org", so this person is probably not a novice in fish knowledge. Location/Pakistan. Author/Hamid Badar Osmany. (CC BY NC)

Macrognathus_aculeatus_SuNi_flip-crop700.jpg주로 국내 동식물 사진을 소개하는 naturing.net(자연관찰 기록 공유 사이트)에 올라와 있는 국내의 유일한 걸장어 사진이다.
This is the only photo of Lesser spiny eel(Macrognathus aculeatus) posted on the “Naturing. net”,  nature observation record sharing site, which mainly introduces photos of Korean fauna and flora. It is regrettable that we cannot confirm whether the speicmen is imported ornamental fish or domestically collected one. If it was collected within Korea, this photo value would be high. Macrognathus_aculeatus_Den-2photo.jpg 색상이 일반적인 설명이나 다른 이미지 자료들과는 너무 다르다. The color is very different from the general descriptions or other image materials. Anyway, it is listed on the fishbase.org site under the name of Macrognathus aculeatus.
