(Electric catfish)
Malapterurus electricus(Gmelin, 1789). Max length/122cm(SL). max. published weight/20.0 kg. max. reported age/10 years.
D/One adipose fin(기름지느러미). A/spines 0, soft rays 9–11. Vertebrae/38-41. Caudal fin/7-8 branched rays.

Electric catfish
Malapterurus electricus(Gmelin, 1789). Max length/122cm(SL). max. published weight/20.0 kg. max. reported age/10 years.
D/One adipose fin. A/spines 0, soft rays 9–11. Vertebrae/38-41. Caudal fin/7-8 branched rays.

Distribution; In Africa :Nile and tropical Africa (exclusive of Lake Victoria), the Lake Turkana, Lake Chad and Senegal basins.
General; M.electricus, a thickset fish with six mouth barbels and a single adipose fin on its back, just anterior to the rounded tail fin. Pectoral fin placed near body mid-depth; 7-8 branched caudal fin rays; adults and young marked with large spots and blotches, some up to 4-5 times an eye diameter; caudal fin usually well-spotted in adults; caudal saddle and bar pattern poorly developed in all ages. It is brownish or grayish, and attains a length and weight of about 1.2 metres and 23 kilograms. but most museum specimens much smaller

M. electricus is capable of generating and controlling the discharge of up to 450 volts of electricity. It uses its power to defend itself and to capture prey. The electric is derived from pectoral muscle and surrounds almost the entire body. The shock is powerful enough to knock over a grown man, although it has never been known to be fatal to humans. The electric organs of Malapterurus have been used in studies of neuronal metabolism, axonal transport.

.Occurs among rocks favors standing water. Active at night, feeding mainly on fish stunned by electric shocks. Electric organ discharge(EOD) is intermittent and the amplitude increases with size of the fish. Responds immediately to cyclic light changes, exhibiting maximum EOD activity shortly after sunset and lowest activity just after sunrise. Adults form pairs and breed in excavated cavities or holes. It is assumed that the male tends the clutch. Others report that the male takes the eggs into his mouth. It is also unknown how the fry is immune to the electric shocks by the parents. Malapterurus electricus is eaten as food in parts of Africa. Being a food fish, M. electricus is also encountered in the pet trade as an aquarium fish.

Traditional medicine in ancient Egypt
Electric catfish is an old world catfish and it is reputed that Doctors in ancient Egypt used shocks from the Electric Catfish to reduce the pain of arthritis. This trait is still used today in some areas. It also has the earliest reference of them as hieroglyphics on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs some 5000 years.

Electric catfish in ancient Egyptian relic Narmer Palette
Malapterurus electricus was well known to the ancient Egyptians.  One of the earliest artifacts to utilize hieroglyphs, the extraordinary Palette of Narmer, depicts the electric catfish in a central location on both sides. The dense siltstone palette dates from 3100 BC and it depicts Egypt’s first pharaoh, King Narmer who unified ancient Egypt. The Narmer Palette is a 63-centimetre-tall, shield-shaped, ceremonial palette, carved from a single piece of flat, soft dark gray-green siltstone. Both sides of the Palette are decorated, carved in raised relief. It is a significant Egyptian archeological find. This palette is belonging at least nominally, to the category of cosmetic palettes. It contains some of the earliest hieroglyphic inscriptions ever found. At the top of both sides are the central serekhs bearing the rebus symbols catfish and chisel inside. Why is the catfish in such a prominent place on the palette? King Narmer’s name was an elision of two hieroglyphs “n’r” and “mr”. N’r stands for catfish, and mr stands for chisel.  So the first godking of Egypt was literally named “Catfish-chisel” which is exactly what the symbol on the palette consists of, in conclusion, the king's name is King Catfish. And some experts claim that the catfish here is an electric catfish.

The purpose of ceremonial palette was probably to show the king as the guarantor for Egypt's stability, keeping rebellious tribes in order. The Pharaoh is wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt and smiting enemies. A falcon(king himself) holds foes by a nose-ring, and six flowers give the number 6,000. Behind the pharaoh stands his sandal bearer. At top: two heads of the cow godd- ess Hathor are flanking the king's name: a catfish and a chisel. Bottom: Fallen men with the sign "town" and its name - a rosette. On the opposite side(not shown) the king is wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt as he inspects decapitated foes. The patterns on the front and back of the slate represent the king's achievement in unifying the upper and lower Egypt
