분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 제주도, 일본 남부에서부터 서태평양~인도양, 동아프리카에 분포.
일반개요; 측선 위의 모비늘이 매우 단단하면서 아래위 방향으로 아주 길다. 모비늘은 측선의 직선부 전체를 차지한다. 모비늘 부분은 융기된 형태이다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 후단 2/3는 연조로 된 토막지느러미들이 차지한다. 미병부는 가늘다. 가슴의 복부 쪽에 비늘이 없다. 가슴지느러미 끝은 뒷지느러미 기점을 지난다. 체색은 어두운 청회색이며 배쪽은 은회색이다. 지느러미들도 어두운 색이다. 아가미뚜껑 상단 가장자리에 비교적 큰 검은점이 있다. 연안 수역 표층에서 무리지어 유영생활을 하며 물고기와 오징어를 주식한다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Jeju Island in Korea, southern Japan, western Pacific and Indian Ocean including East Africa.
General: Strong, very large scutes on straight part of lateral line. Scutes forming a lateral keel. Curved part of lateral line short, with 21~28 scales. Caudal peduncle very slender. Ventral part of chest scaleless. The last 7 to 9 soft rays of dorsal fin and 8 to 10 soft rays of anal fin are separate finlets. Pectoral fin extending well over the origin of anal fin. Color bluish dark grey dorsally, silvery below, dark fins. Opercle with a large black spot. Primarily oceanic, lives near surface of coastal waters. Forms schools and feeds mainly on fishes and squid.
