분포; 서대서양/캐나다 노바스코샤에서부터 버뮤다, 브라진, 멕시코만, 카리브해. 동대서양/모리타니아, 앙골라, 포르투갈, 아조레스 제도, 프랑스 남부의 대서양 해안. 파나마 운하를 넘어 온 개체들이 태평양에서 잡혔다.
일반개요; 대서양 타폰은 연안 바다, 기수, 라군, 그리고 강에서 산다. 주로 무리 지어 다니는 물고기를 잡아먹고 새우와 게도 먹는다. 대서양 타폰은 재생산력이 매우 높다. 203 cm 크기의 암컷의 경우 한번에 1천2백만개의 알을 낳는다. 개방된 바다와 떨어진 장소에서 알을 낳으며 부화된 치어는 투명한 렙토세파루스 유생 형태이며 기수로 이동하여 나중에는 민물로 들어가 성장하다가 다시 바다로 돌아간다. 중앙 아메리카의 니카라과 호수와 플로리다 주 딥레이크(Deep Lake)에는 평생을 민물에 사는 개체들이 있다.

타폰은 최대어 기록이 2.5m, 161 kg이다. 등쪽은 연한 녹색이나 청색을 띠고 측면은 은빛이다. 입은 크고 위를 향해 있으며 아래턱에는 긴 골판이 붙어있다. 등지느러미의 마지막 기조는 실처럼 길며 거의 꼬리에 닿는다. 대서양 타폰은 원시형 폐처럼 수면 위의 공기를 마셔 부레에 담을 수 있으며 이로 인해 저 산소 물에서 생존할 수 있다. 저산소 환경에서도 포식 행위를 할 수 있는 이점을 제공한다. 대서양 타폰은 스포츠 낚시 대상어로는 인기가 높다. 크기가 커서뿐만이 아니라 낚시에 걸렸을 때 투쟁력이 매우 강하고 수면 위로 뛰어오르는 반항 행동이 매우 드라마틱하기 때문이다. 생선으로서는 뼈가 많아서 식용으로 인기는 별로 없지만 시장에서 거래는 되며 컬럼비아에서는 상업적으로 양식되며 맛있는 생선 대우를 받는다. 큰 비늘은 인조 진주나 장신구로 가공된다. 미국 플로리다 주와 앨라배마주 주에서는 타폰을 죽이거나 소지하려면 허가를 받아야 하기 때문에 잡았다가 다시 놓아 준다.

Distribution; Atlantic Ocean/from Nova Scotia, Bermuda and southward to Brazil in western Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. From Mauritania to Angola in eastern Atlantic Ocean; with exceptional records in Portugal, Azores and Atlantic coast of southern France. It had crossed the Panama canal and was also caught at Coiba Island in the Pacific Ocean.
General;The Atlantic tarpon(Megalops atlanticus) inhabits coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and rivers. Tarpons feed almost exclusively on schooling fish, shrimp and occasionally crabs. Has high fecundity, a 203 cm female is estimated to produce over 12 million eggs. Spawn in waters which can be temporarily isolated from the open sea. Transparent leptocephalus larvae migrate into estuaries. Some populations may complete life cycle in freshwater, e.g. Lake Nicaragua in Central America, and Deep Lake in Florida.

The swim bladder, attached to the esophagus, can be filled directly with air and permits the fish to live in oxygen-poor waters like a primitive lung. This gives the tarpon a predatory advantage when oxygen levels in the water are low. Tarpons have been recorded at up to 2.5 m in length and weighing up to 161 kg. The Atlantic tarpon is also known as the silver king. In appearance, tarpons are greenish or bluish on top and silver on the sides. The large mouth is turned upwards and the lower jaw contains an elongated, bony plate. The last ray of the dorsal fin is much longer than the others, reaching nearly to the tail. Tarpons are considered one of the great saltwater game fishes, not only because of their size and their accessible haunts, but also because of their fighting spirit when hooked; they are very strong, making spectacular leaps into the air.

Marketed fresh or salted. Large scales are used in ornamental work and in preparation of artificial pearls. Used to be cultured commercially in Colombia. The flesh is also highly appreciated despite its being bony. In Florida and Alabama, a special permit is required to kill and keep a tarpon, so most tarpon fishing there is catch and release.
