분포; 인도•태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 서태평양, 인도양, 오스트렐리아 동북부, 동아프리카에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸이 심하게 측편되어 있다. 비늘이 없다. 배의 가장자리가 얇고 앞부분은 칼날처럼 얇으며 앞으로 튀어나와 전체적으로 삼각형 모양이다. 입은 작으며 입이 앞으로 튀어나갈 수 있다. 등지느러미 극조는 퇴화되었으며 성장하면서 없어진다. 배지느러미의 처음 2개 연조는 융합되었고 길게 연장되었다. 등쪽은 암청색, 배쪽은 은백색이며 측선의 아래 위로 각각 2~3열의 어두운 점들이 있다. 연안 깊은 수심(50~200m) 바닥 쪽에 서식하며 강 하구에 나타날 때도 있다. 무리를 짓는다. 저서 무척추동물을 주식한다. 소금 치지 않고도 공기 중에서 잘 건조된다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea to East Africa, northeastern Australia.
General: Body distinctly compressed, body scaleless, ventral margin thin and sharp, bulging anteroventrally. Dorsal spine vestigial, disappearing with growth. First 2 soft rays of pelvic fin fused and elongated. Dark blue above, silvery white below, 2~3 rows of dark spots above and below lateral line. Protrusible jaws. Inhabits deeper coastal waters(50~200m) near the bottom, sometimes in river estuaries. Found in schools. Feeds on benthic invertebrates. Readily dries in air without salting.
