분포; 인도•서태평양/홍해, 동아프리카에서 사모아까지, 남으로는 오스트렐리아, 뉴칼레도니아, 북으로는 일본 남부 야에야마제도에 분포. 멜콩 델타 하류 조간대의 담수에도 발견되었다. 
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 납작하게 측편되었다. 몸은 은빛이며 등지느러미는 노랗고 위 끝쪽은 어둡다. 꼬리지느러미는 노랗다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 앞 가장자리가 흑색이다. 등에서 눈 속으로 어두운 수직 줄무늬가 그어져 있는데 유어는 선이 뚜렷하면서 눈 아래까지 연장되어 있다. 유어는 가슴지느러미의 기부 앞을 지나는 두 번째의 어두운 줄무늬가 복부까지 병행한다. 만, 기수, 하천 하류에서 무리지어 산다. 플랑크톤과 잡식을 한다.

Distribution: Red Sea, East Africa to Samoa, south to Australia, New Caledonia, north to the Yaeyamas in Japan. Known from the freshwater tidal zone of the Mekong delta.
General: Head and body compressed. Body silvery, dorsal fin yellowish with dusky tip. Caudal fin yellowish. Leading edges of dorsal and anal fins black. Juveniles with a dark bar through eye and a second bar from nape through pectoral fin base. These bars becoming pale or disappear in adults. Bays, estuaries and lower reaches of freshwater streams. Commonly in schools. Feed on plankton and detritus.
