분포; 서태평양: 한국의 제주도, 일본 남부, 서태평양, 인도네시아, 오스트렐리아의 서북부에 분포.
일반개요; 체고는 체장(SL)의 2.7~3.5분의 1이다. 가슴지느러미는 길며 항문을 초과한다. 배지느러미 제 1 연조는 항문을 지난다. 살아있을 때 체측에 2개의 수평 노랑색 띠무늬와 주둥이 아래에서부터 배 가장자리를 따라 꼬리지느러미 앞까지 노랑색 띠무늬가 있다. 등쪽은 적황색 또는 분홍색이며 배쪽은 은백색이다. 꼬리지느러미 상엽의 위쪽 기조는 실처럼 길게 연장되었고 노랑색이다. 모래•개펄 지역에 서식. 수심 45~90m에 많으나 큰 개체들은 110m 이상 깊은 수심에 서식한다. 갑각류, 두족류, 물고기를 먹는다. 긴실꼬리돔은 불완전한 암수동체이다. 수컷은 기능이 있는 고환을 가지고 있으면서 동시에 덜 발달한 난소도 평생 가지고 있다.

Distribution: Western Pacific/Jeju Island in Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea, Indonesia, and northwestern Australia.
General: Body depth 1/2.7~1/3.5 of SL. Pectoral fin long, reaching almost to level of origin of anal fin. Pelvic fins, reaching beyond anus. Body with 2 broad yellow lateral stripes when alive. Ventral margin from head to peduncle yellow when alive. Orange red or pinkish upper body, silvery below. Upper lobe of caudal fin falcate, elongated and yellow, usually ribbon-like in adults. Found on sand or mud bottoms. Abundant between 45~90m depth, but larger fish generally occur in depths greater than 110m. Feed on crustaceans, fishes, and cephalopods. This species is a rudimentary hermaphrodite, in which males have functional testes but also with rudimentary ovarian portions that remain throughout their life.
