영명은 “Swell scum sardine(너울거품정어리)”이다.

그 후 1901년에 다른 어류 학자들(Jordan and Starks)이 일본에서 채집된 한 신종의 학명을 아이소 플로스마리스(Iso flosmaris)로 명명했는데 오길비가 발견한 “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)”와 닮은 데가 많아서 서프은줄멸과(Notocheiridae)에 집어 넣었다.

With single dorsal fin, no more information on fins.

Dustrubution; Southeast Pacific and Southwest Atlantic/Chile and Argentina's southernmost waters.
General; Notocheirus  In Korea, there is confusion in classification of the family Notocheiridae and family Isonidae, because information not updated. Species of Isonidae had been classified in Notocheiridae, but moved to family Isonidae long before. For example, Flower of the surf(Iso flosmaris), a Korea-distributing species is still in the family Notocheiridae, in most Korean literatures.

The only species in the Notocheiridae family. Swell scum sardine is very small fish. Body is covered with cycloid scales, absent in head and some body surfaces below the base of pectoral fin. In most fishes, arrangement of scales from top to bottom is oblique, whereas in Notocheirus hubbsi, the arrangement is characteristically vertical. Body highly compressed, deepest at level of vertical plane through origin of pectorals, tapering towards caudal peduncle. The ventral edge anterior to the anus forms a sharp keel. Head small, truncate posteriorly, snout round, mouth oblique. The premaxillary bone has no forward protruding function and is attached to the frenum in the middle of the dorsal surface of the head. Maxillary slightly concave anteriorly. Small teeth that are curved inward are developed at the front end of the upper jaw, the palatine bone has degenerated teeth, and the vomer has no teeth. A notable external character of some specimens of Notocheirus is the presence of "odontodes", teeth in dermal bones of the head other than the dentary and premaxilla.

The gill opening wide and gill rakers developed on the first gill arch. The anus is located just in front of the origin of the anal fin. There is a small membrane behind the genital opening. Notocheirus hubbsi has only one dorsal fin, whereas the Iso flosmaris in sister group has two dorsal fins. The base length of dorsal fin is shorter than 1/2 the base length of anal fin, and posterior ends of both fins are in a symmetrical position, facing each other. The last soft ray of the dorsal and anal fins is unbranched ray, and the rest are all branched rays. Pectoral fin broad, rounded, inserted high on body with dorsalmost ray originating above posteriormost point of opercle. The lower part of the pectoral fin covers the starting point of mid lateral band. The pelvic fin is attached to the lower part of the body.

The body color is translucent silver and with a wide opaque silvery lateral band from the axilla to the base of the caudal fin. Little is known about the Notocheirus hubbsi. It is mainly found in places where foamy waves occur on the beach, but it is a very rare fish even in Chile, where it is distributed. It is presumed that the reason it is rare is because the number of oocytes is reduced and fertility is low.

[Designation history of Family Isonidae and Family Notocheiridae is fraught with confusion]
The process by which the family Isonidae and the family Notocheiridae were created has a very confusing past. William Ogilby(1805–1873), an Irish zoologist, identified a fish collected in Australia as a new species, gave it the common name “flower of the wave,” the scientific name Tropidostethus rhothopilus, and classified it in the Family Notocheiridae. Then, in 1901, other ichthyologists Jordan and Starks) named a new species collected in Japan as “Iso flosmaris”, which is similar to the “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)” discovered by Ogilvy. Because it has many similarities, it placed in the Notocheiridae. Iso flosmaris is a species also distributed in Korea and Korean common name is 물꽃치(=water flower fish). In 1919, it was revealed that the genus name Tropidostethus had already been applied to insects, so the genus name was changed to Iso, and Tropidostethus rhothopilus was revised to Iso rhothopilus. As the family composition of Family Notocheiridae went up and down, the family member expanded to include one species of genus Notocheirus(Notocheirus hubbsi) and five species of genus Iso. Notocheirus hopsi was designated as a new species in 1937, and the specimen was discovered in Chile. About in 1944, claims began to be made that Notocheirus hubbsi had a slightly different lineage from the genus Iso, and in 1950, Notocheirus hubbsi was subdivided into the subfamily(Notocheirinae). Finally, around 1996, the genus Iso became independent from the Family Notocheiridae and established the new Family Isonidae(Isonids), leaving only one species, Notocheirus hopsi, in the family Notocheiridae. However, confusion arises because there is still information that indicates the Isonids are in the Family Notocheiridae rather than in the Family Isonidae
