Order Myctophiformes(lanternfishes). Family Myctophidae(Lanternfishes) Distribution; Northwest and North Pacific/Distributed intensively along the Pacific coast of Japan, and intermittently along the North Pacific Ocean to the right of Japan. Juveniles were found on Jeju Island and Busan, South Korea. The Japanese lanternfish has elongated body, highest at the origin of the dorsal fin and gradually lowers but moderately toward the back. Body covered with ctenoid scales. Head medium in size and eyes are round. Mouth large compared to head, and upper jaw is larger than the lower jaw. Pectoral fin small compared to body size. Pelvic fin is larger than the pectoral fin. Anus located in the center of the body and close to origin of anal fin. Anal fin longer than the pelvic fin and becomes shorter toward the tail. The base of the dorsal fin is longer than the anal fin, and the height become shorter toward the tail. A small adipose fin behind the dorsal fin. Caudal fin is forked. With multiple photophores and luminescent organs at various locations of body, and the location and number of photophores are used as important criteria for classifying the species of Myctophidae. In addition, these organs varies widely depending on gender. [For further learning] There are so many species(about 248) in Family Myctophidae(Lanternfishes) that it is impossible even for specialists to identify the species by appearance. Japanese lanternfish is, for example, scientifically depicted as “has 4 “Prc“, and “VLO“, “SAO3“, “Pol“ close to or below lateral line”. This system of abbreviations, if you are serious reader, can be understood by the following diagram. This diagram is also introduced in Family section.
