[Parr marks]. Many salmonid species have dark crossbars on body sides in young stage. This is called as “parr marks”, “parr” means a young salmon in Norwegian. Parr marks more blackish in younger specimen and fade away gradually with growth, finally disappear. Rarely some species absent in parr marks. The black bars(parr marks) of O. keta are different in location; shifted closer to back than this illustration. Illustrated by Kim In Young |

Order Salmoniformes Family Salmonidae(Salmonids) Distribution; North Pacific/Korea, Japan, Okhotsk and Bering Sea, Arctic Alaska south to San Diego, California, USA. Asia: Iran. Pelvic fins with axillary process; caudal truncate to slightly emarginate. Large individuals in ocean are steel-blue dorsally, with some indistinct spotting in a darker shade, silvery to white ventrally. Males have tinges of black on the tips of its caudal, anal and pectoral fins. Spawning males typically grow an elongated snout and enlarged teeth. Spawning males are dark olive to black dorsally; grey-red with green vertical bars on the sides; dark grey ventrally; anal and pelvic fins with white tips. Spawning females resemble spawning males but less distinctly marked. Inhabits ocean and coastal streams. Chum salmon have the largest natural range of any Pacific salmon, and undergo the longest migrations within the genus Oncorhynchus, far up the Yukon River and deep into the Amur River basin in Asia. Migrating fry form schools in estuaries, remain close to shore for a few months and finally disperse to enter the sea. Epipelagic. Juveniles and adults feed mainly on copepods, tunicates and euphausiids but also on pteropods, squid and small fishes. Adults cease feeding in freshwater. Spawning occurs at depths of ~3 meters, near the head waters over sand and pebbles. At spawning time the female excavates a hole of around 1 meter diameter and 50 cm depth before spawning can occur. Nest building is done by the female by lying on one side and lashing its tail to displace the sand and silt on the river bed. The pair then settles in the nest, mouths gape, and with rapid vibration of the pair, eggs and milt are released. The female then covers the nest with gravel and sand by using her caudal fin, while the male on sentry duty and aggressive to other approaching males. Male may spawn with different females; females likewise may spawn with other males and therefore builds different nests. Adults die after a week. Number of eggs in a batch is about 2,500~3,000, the size about 0.67cm, hatches in 60 days. Come springtime the juveniles go to the ocean and come back 3-4 years later to their exact birthplace. This fish reaches maturity in 2-4 years. Recurrent ratio is different with populations and localities; 2~3% in United States and Japan, less than 2% in Korea(as of 2000). [※ Salmons can be divided into 2 groups; the Pacific salmons and European salmons. Salmo is a genus that includes the European species of salmon and trout, among them the familiar Atlantic salmon(Salmo salar; 150 cm TL) and the brown trout(Salmo trutta; Max 140 cm SL). The natural distribution of Salmo also extends to Northern Africa and to Western Asia around the Black Sea basin. The single Salmo species naturally found in the Atlantic North America is the Atlantic salmon, whereas the salmon and trout of the Pacific basin belong to another genus, Oncorhynchus(includes 16 species). The generic name Salmo(includes about 50 species) derives from the Latin salmō(salmon). The number of distinct species and subspecies in Salmo is a debated issue. Atlantic salmon and brown trout are widespread species, while most of the other taxa are narrowly distributed forms endemic to single watersheds. Both male and females of Pacific salmons die after spawning, but Atlantic salmon different in this ecology. Most males of Atlantic salmon die after spawning, while 10-40% of females may survive and return to the sea in autumn or overwinter in rivers, feed one summer, and migrate again. They may spawn in the year following the first reproduction or may remain at sea for 18 months before returning once more to the river. Of the returning females, about 0.3-6 % spawn a second time and very few spawn a third or fourth time. In short rivers with presumably less exhaustive upstream migration, up to 34% of returning individuals spawn a second time; some individuals may spawn for up to six seasons] |
