분포; 인도-태평양/한국의 서해와 남해, 일본 중부 이남, 중국, 타이완, 필리핀, 말레이시아, 인도네시아, 오스트레일리아, 파푸아뉴기니, 마셜제도, 프렌치폴리네시아, 동인도양에 분포한다.
일반개요; 돛물뱀(Highfin snake eel)의 다른 영명으로는 Blackfin snake eel(검은지느러미 뱀장어)가 있다. 몸은 연장되어 길고, 몸통은 약간 원통형이다. 꼬리는 옆으로 납작한 편이며 꼬리 끝은 뾰족하고 두껍다. 꼬리 길이는 머리와 몸통 길이를 합친 것의 1.6배 정도 길다. 아래턱은 위턱보다 짧고 입은 눈의 뒤쪽 가장자리 까지 벌어진다. 눈은 중간 크기이다. 측선의 머리 쪽 앞쪽은 62개의 감각공으로 구성되어 있다. 감각공들은 모두 그 둘레가 검정색이다. 수염이 윗입술의 아래 쪽 가장자리를 따라 나있고 눈 앞 가장자리의 아래에 1개가 있고 그 아래 윗입술과 중간이 되는 사이에도 있으며 앞콧구멍 기부에도 있다. 가슴지느러미는 길게 연장되지 않았으며 뒤가 둥글다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미는 상대적으로 높은 편이며 펼친 모습이 잘 보인다. 등지느러미 기점은 아가미구멍 바로 위 또는 아가미구멍에서 약간 앞쪽에 있다.

색상이 탄색(tan color) 내지 황갈색이며 큰 개체는 측선 위쪽 몸이 검어지고 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 가장자리가 검다. 등지느러미의 맨 앞부분에 큰 암갈색 부분이 하나 있다. 몸의 측면에 잘 보이지 않는 검은 점들이 흩어져 있을 수 있다. 가슴지느러미는 검은 색이며 작은 개체들은 투명 무색일 수 있다. 눈 앞에 뚜렷한 밝은 색 부분이 있고 앞콧구멍 위 주둥이에도 작은 밝은 부분이 있다. 아주 얕은 수심에서부터 40 m 수심 사이에서 발견되며 부드러운 모래 바닥에 구멍을 파고 산다.

Distribution; Indo-Pacific/South and West Seas of Korea, south of central Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands French Polynesia, and eastern Indian Ocean.
General; The highfin snake eel(Ophichthus altipennis), also known as the blackfin snake eel or the black-finned snake eel. The body is elongated and long, the torso is slightly oval, and the tail is relatively flat, pointed and bald. The tail length is 1.6 times longer than the combined head and body length. The lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw; the cleft extends directly below the posterior edge of the eye. The eyes are medium large. There are about 62 anterior lateral line pores. The sensory pores on the head all have black edges. Barbels prominent along ventral margin of upper lip; one beneath the anterior margin of the eye, the other midway between it and the base of the anterior nostril. The pectoral fin is not extended, and the rear edge is rounder. The dorsal and anal fins are relatively higher and clearly visible. Dorsal fin origin just above or slightly in advance of gill openings.

Color tan to brown; larger specimens becoming darker above lateral midline and with a black margin on the dorsal and anal fins. Sometimes invisible dark spots are scattered on body side. The foremost part of the dorsal fin has a large dark brown block. Pectoral fins black, those of smaller specimens may be clear. A prominent pale area before eye and a smaller pale blotch on snout above anterior nostril. It dwells at a depth range of 0 to 40 m and forms burrows in soft inshore sand sediments.
