Distribution; Indo-Pacific/off Durban, South Africa, Red Sea, north to South China Sea, southern Japan, Taiwan and Jeju Island in Korea. General; Ophichthus erabo is a species that was revealed as an unrecorded species in Korea in 2019 as a result of a study of one individual collected at a depth of 50 m in the southern part of Jeju Island, Korea in January 2018. The body shape is cylindrical, long and thin. The snout is short and broadly rounded when viewed from the top or from the side. Underside of snout bisected by a groove. A pair of long tube-shaped anterior nostrils at the end of the snout, posterior nostril located at the upper edge of upper lip, covered with a flap, and the flap extends to the lower edge of the upper jaw of the mouth.
Lower jaw included, its tip reaching to posterior margin of anterior nostril tube. Upper lips with a knob-like barbel at anterior margin of posterior nostril. End of tail thick, pointed. Tail without caudal fin. Dorsal fin origin inserted just a little before gill opening. The eyes are located slightly closer to the tip of the snout than the center of the mouth. The mouth opens far beyond the posterior edge of the eye. The gill opening opens narrowly at the base of the pectoral fin. Pectoral fin moderate and slender and with 15 rays. The dorsal fin, which started right in front of the gill opening, ends 1cm before the tip of the tail. The posterior fin starts right behind the anus and ends at the same position as the dorsal fin.
[Refer to illustration 1 and 2];1 row of teeth on each jaw. The teeth are canine-shaped, about same in size and sharpness. In the vomer, the front upper jaw, 1 row of canine teeth. 3 superorbital pores(SO) in a row, 6 for infraorbital pores(IO), and 8 for preopercular, mandibular pores(POM), and 4 supratemporal pores(ST) on the back of the head. The lateral line is distinct and arranged in one row starting from posterior upper head and terminates at a little before the tail end. The anus is located behind the center of the body.
When fresh, the overall color is brown, and the belly side is whitish. Roughly round brown spots in various sizes distributed all over the body. The spots on the head are much smaller and denser than the spots on body. Also spots on the chin and ventral side of the neck. 5-6 small faint spots on the pectoral fin, and elongated oval spots similar to the body spots are distributed on dorsal fin. Spots absent on abdomen and pelvic fins. Pelvic fin is white. After formalin fixation, the body color changes from brown to white as a whole, and the spots on the body remain distinct. The translucent parts of the dorsal and ventral fins become opaque. It is a benthic fish. Digs itself into sandy areas. Carnivorous. Inhabits within 200 m depth.
