샛멸목 종들은 넬슨의 어류분류체계인 "Fishes of the World"의 제4판(2006년)에서 6과로 정리되어 있었다가 넬슨 제5판(2016)에서는 3개 과가 민머리치목으로 분리되어 나갔다. 이후 샛멸목에 1과가 추가되어 현재는 4과로 구성되어 있다(아래의 과 명단 참조) 샛멸목의 대표적인 통칭 일반 영명은 “marine smelts”인데 이를 직역하면 한국 어명 리스트의 “바다빙어”가 될 수 있어서 바다빙어목(Order Osmeriformes,smelts)이나 바다빙어과(Family Osmeridae/Smelts)와 혼동을 일으킬 수 있다. 담수에서 잡히는 바다빙어목의 빙어들이 민물고기로 오인될 수 있지만 이들 역시 “바다”에서 올라온 소하성 물고기인 것이다.

Order Argentiniformes(marine smelts)
In the fourth edition(2006) of Nelson's taxonomy of fish, "Fishes of the World," the species in Order Argentiniformes were grouped into 6 families. In Nelson's 5th edition(2016), three families moved to new Order Alepocephaliformes. Since then, 1 family(Bathylagidae) has been added to Argentiniformes, thus now it is consisted with 4 families(see the list of family). The representative common name of Argentiniformes is “marine smelts,” which can be confused with the Order Osmeriformes(smelts) or Family Osmeridae(Smelts), since the smelts or "freshwater" smelts of the Osmeridae also live predominantly in the ocean.

※Remark; Goiter blacksmelt의 학명과 체형에 관해서는 혼란이 발견된다. 학명이 Bathylagus benedicti로 표시된 경우도 있고 그러나 대부분 이 학명은 인정된 것이 아닌 것으로 나타난다. 그러나 묘사도에는 이 사진처럼 몸이 긴 것이 있고(소개 안 했음) 위에 소개한 것처럼 짧은 방망이 형이 있어서 이 종에 대해 확실한 데이터가 정리되지 않아 보인다.
※Remark; Confusion is found regarding the scientific name and body type of Goiter blacksmelt. In some cases, the scientific name is given as Bathylagus benedicti, but in most cases this name is not recognized. However, in the depiction, there is a long body like this picture(not introduced) and a short bat type as introduced above, so there seems to be no clear data on this species.
