청어목 Order Clupeiformes(herrings)
청어목은 청어과(Clupeidae)와 멸치과(Engraulidae)를 포함해 7개 과로 구성되어 있다. 한국에는 청어과(Clupeidae)에 10속 11종, 멸치과(Engrulidae)에 4속 7종, 물멸과(Chirocentridae)에 1속 1종이 알려져 있다. 청어목 그룹에는 사료와 식용으로 중요한 자리에 있는 종들이 많다. 청어목 어류는 피소스토메스 어류(physostomes;  physostomous fish)이다. 피소스토메스 어류는 부레에 소화기관으로 연결된 공기통로가 있는 물고기를 말한다. 청어목 물고기들은 측선이 없다. 눈, 지느러미, 비늘은 일반 물고기와 다름없이 정상적으로 가지고 있다. 일반적으로 은빛이며 유선형, 방추형이다. 무리를 지어 다니는 경우가 많다. 대부분 종들이 아가미갈퀴로 플랑크톤을 걸러 먹는다. 다른 물고기에서 볼 수 없는 체측신경동(Recessus lateralis; 體側神經洞)이 있다. 이는 귀와 여러 가지 신경 도관을 연결해 주는 신경두개 (neurocranium, 神經頭蓋) 안에 있는 기관이다. 청어목 어류는 해수, 기수, 담수에서 발견된다.

Clupeiformes is the order of ray-finned fish that grouped with 7 families. includes the herring family, and the anchovy family. Korea distributing population comprises 11 species in Clupeidae, 7 species in Engrulidae, single species in Chirocentridae. The Clupeiformes includes many of the most important forage and food fish. Clupeiformes are physostomes, which means that the gas bladder has a pneumatic duct connecting it to the gut. They typically lack a lateral line, but still have the eyes, fins and scales that are common to most fish, though not all fish have these attributes. They are generally silvery fish with streamlined, spindle-shaped, bodies, and they often school. Most species eat plankton which they filter from the water with their gill rakers. Recessus lateralis present (part of the otophysic connection in which various sensory canals merge within a chamber in the otic region of the neurocranium, not known from any other group); Occurs in/ Marine Fresh Brackish.
